Have you ever felt like committing suicide but not dying? Sounds strange, right?

If you think it is a very weird thing and you have never felt anything like this, you are lucky mate! However, if you are someone who has had this feeling, then it’s time you reach out for medical help.

This feeling of dying without pain or naturally, without putting any external efforts is called Passive Suicidal Ideation.

What Does It Mean?

We all know about clinical depression but a chunk of the population is not aware of its dire consequences. Suicide is one of them.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.”

When the major depressive disorder is the final stage, passive suicidal ideation can be characterized as the primary stage. Aimee Daramus, a therapist who specializes in serious mental illnesses says, “Passing suicidal thoughts can be pretty common when you feel overwhelmed by something and don’t have a clear idea how to handle it”.

It is the stage when suicidal thoughts are not outspoken or talked about but the behaviour of the person suffering from such feelings can be judged to ascertain whether immediate medical attention is required or not.

It must be noted that passive thoughts can easily and rapidly accelerate to active suicidal thoughts.

What Does The Patient Feel?

A patient of passive suicidal ideation wishes feels drained and exhausted. He/ She may not be able to get up from the bed or eat properly for days together.  They wish to die in sleep or to die out of a heart attack so that they experience the least pain and die naturally.

Most of the patients of passive suicidal ideation brush off these thoughts without discussing them with their near and dear ones. However, this attitude may be harmful and life-threatening.

It is reported in several cases that chronic depression starts with passive suicidal ideation which quickly accelerates into active suicidal ideation and ultimately into clinical depression.

There are no developed medical means to identify passive suicidal ideation. However, we can save us from these thoughts by acting ourselves.

If anyone of you reading this article gets such thoughts, talk to your near and dear ones and reach out to a doctor for psychiatric help because prevention is always better than cure.
