Watch: World’s Top 10 Happiest Countries

It’s said that happiness is a choice. Ours to make, each responsible for their own and thus is difficult to measure because everyone has a different metric for their happiness. Thus, making happiness very subjective and variable.

However, this limitation didn’t stop the United Nations (U.N.) from trying to figure it out. Every year, the U.N. Sustainable Development Solutions Network publishes its World Happiness Report—a study that examines the connections between happiness and development.

Around 1,000 people in each U.N. member state rate their standard of living on a scale from 0 to 10. Simultaneously, researchers collect data from six other areas, namely GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support, trust and corruption, perceived freedom to make life decisions, and generosity.

The World Happiness Report 2021 was recently released, and while the results were not that different from previous years, the list still is a bit interesting, given it was amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Therefore, this time the report paid particular attention to how different governments have dealt with the pandemic and how much citizens trust their government.
