The Indian startup ecosystem is often painted in hues of gold: massive funding rounds, soaring valuations and the promise of creating the next global unicorn.
We love the success stories, the rapid scale, and the founders who become the faces of India’s new economy. But behind some of those headlines lies a very different story, one involving layoffs, stalled funding, financial irregularities, and battles over corporate governance.
Over the past few years, several high-profile Indian startups that once attracted significant investor interest have faced intense scrutiny. In some cases, investigations uncovered questionable financial reporting. In others, governance disputes and aggressive expansion exposed deeper problems with the way the businesses were being run.
The question is not simply how these companies failed. It is how companies that appeared to be thriving reached that point in the first place.
Was the problem an obsession with rapid growth? Weak internal controls? Pressure to meet ambitious targets? Or a combination of all three?
In this video, we look at five Indian startups whose journeys from success to scandal raised uncomfortable questions about the country’s startup boom.

TinyOwl’s rapid expansion was followed by mass layoffs and a dramatic dispute between employees and management. GoMechanic’s growth story unravelled after its founders acknowledged serious errors in financial reporting. Trell faced scrutiny over alleged financial irregularities and a stalled funding environment. Mojocare’s investors reported financial irregularities after reviewing its accounts, prompting layoffs and a scaling down of operations.
And then there was BYJU’S, once India’s most valuable startup, whose enormous valuation was followed by investor disputes, governance concerns, financial troubles, and eventually insolvency proceedings.
The consequences went far beyond balance sheets. Employees lost jobs, investors faced uncertainty, creators complained about delayed payments, and businesses that had once projected rapid growth were forced to restructure, wind down, or fight for survival.
The stories are different, but they point to a common question. What happens when growth becomes more important than the foundations supporting it?
As India’s startup ecosystem continues to mature, these cases underline the importance of due diligence, transparent financial reporting and strong corporate governance. A high valuation can make a company look successful. But sustainable growth depends on something harder to measure – trust.
A startup is only as valuable as the integrity of its books.
