Religious Differences Divide And Poison Our Minds!

India has witnessed Hindu – Muslim riots ever since we have been declared independent. Although we are physically free, our minds are still chained in the shackles of religion. The day we break through these chains is when India will move forward economically and attain true freedom.

Given below are the major communal riots that have taken place in India –

1984- Anti-Sikh Riots –

When the Akali Dal’s leader had invited militant religious leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to take up residence inside the Golden Temple, Indira Gandhi ordered to remove Bhindranwale and other armed militants from the Golden Temple complex.

This led to a planned assassination of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards. This in turn led to a nationwide riot where more than 8000 Sikhs were killed.

1992-1993 Babri Masjid Demolition / Bombay Riots –

Babri Masjid was illegally demolished by a group of Hindu activists stating that the site of Babri Masjid is the birthplace of Lord Rama.

It led to riots between Hindus and Muslims which occurred across India, affecting mainly Bombay. Over 900 people were killed in Bombay. It extended to Bangladesh as well, leading to various shops and houses of Hindus being burned down.

2002- Gujarat Riots

It is believed to be an aftermath of the Babri Masjid Demolition. When some Hindu pilgrims were returning from Ayodhya after a religious ceremony at the site of demolished Babri Masjid, the train in which they travelled was set on fire killing 59 Hindus, most of whom were women and children.

The train was headed to Ahmedabad where the family of the deceased were waiting. This incident led a group of angry Hindu mob to attack the Muslim community in Gujarat with swords and the shops of the same were burned down.

In the wake of the recent Delhi riots, the horrendous memories of all these riots are refreshed. If only we had put a stop on the seeds of hatred being sown then, it would have been a better world today.
