The Story Of Bharat Kalicharan: A Man Who Was Lynched By 200 Women In A Courtroom In Broad Daylight

I’m sure you have heard of the warning “don’t take the law into your own hands.”

But these fearless women did what they had to because they wouldn’t have it any other way.

The justice system is so flawed and corrupt that if you have the means and if it is suitable for the interests of the judge, you’ll be able to walk out freely.

So these women literally took the law into their own hands and brought justice to their community – something the court wouldn’t have done.

The Crime Committed

Terming Bharat Kalicharan also known as Akku Yadav a criminal wouldn’t do justice to the word. Even the word criminal fails to describe the atrocity that he was. He was a pestilence and a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Apart from being a full-time criminal, Kalicharan was a gangster, robber, home invader, serial rapist, extortionist and a serial killer. He grew up right outside of Nagpur in a slum known as Kasturbanagar. From a very young age, his lifestyle involved working in a ghetto that was home to a gang of criminals. He went from being the son of a milkman to being a terror in the slum.

Kalicharan had turned a small-time thug apprenticeship into a career as a mobster. He ruled a gang that was free to rob, torture and kill as they pleased. His main source of revenue was extortion.

Raping women was very stigmatizing and victims could be counted on to keep their mouth shut. One such person included a 10-year-old child who had been a victim of his assault. He had been torturing them, raping them and killing them for over a decade. Kalicharan would bribe the policeman to keep silent and thereby no charges were ever made.

He was arrested in 1999 and jailed under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act of 1981. According to the inhabitants, he had terrorized the slum so much so that there’s at least one indecent assault victim residing in every other house.

Why Did The Crimes Never Come To An End?

Kalicharan collaborated with the police who protected and backed him in exchange for bribes and booze. Every time a complaint was filed, instead of arresting him, the police would report him about the complaint after which he would pursue them and kill them.

What Evoked The People Of The Slum To Finally Take A Stand?

When a 13-year-old child was assaulted a woman named Usha Narayane took a stand. She filed a complaint against and refused to back down. Even after repeated threats from Kalicharan, she retorted that she would rather destroy her family by lighting a cylinder than fall prey to a monster like him. Eventually, Kalicharan and his goons had to back down.

When the neighbors heard of the incident, they decided enough is enough. Anytime they’d see one of his goons on the streets, they’d throw rocks at them. There were a slew of enraged ballots in the streets. When his men noticed the change in tone of the public, they fled. They marched down to Kalicharan’s house on 6th August 2004 and set fire to his house.

For fear of his safety, he made the police arrest him on the 7th so he could be under their protection.

Why Did 200-400 Women Lynch Him In The Court?

After the police arrested him for his own safety, he was set for a bail hearing in court on 13th August 2004. The news that he might be released enraged the women of the slum.

Hundreds of women marched from the slum to the courthouse brandishing vegetable knives and chili powder and sat in the front of the courtroom. Kalicharan arrived confident and unapologetic. When he noticed a woman whom he had already assaulted before, he had the audacity to call her a prostitute and threaten her that he’d rape her again.

Kalicharan was lynched by 200-400 women. He was stabbed at least 70 times and pelted with chili powder and stones. His genitals were also chopped off by a woman he had assaulted. Chilli powder was also thrown at the face of the policemen who were guarding him.

The courtroom that was made of marble was splattered with blood. A 32-year-old Bharat Kalicharan was dead in 15 minutes.

And that is exactly what happens when the women of the world come together to save their own. We live in a country where women’s safety is still debatable as no concrete punishment or warning exists. To this date, a lot of Bharat Kalicharans still walk free.
