Sikh Committee Wants Sunny Leone To Apologise For Using ‘Kaur’ (Which Is Her Real Surname) In Her Own Biopic Web Series!

The SGPC community is angered by the usage of ‘Kaur’ in reference to the title of the web series which relates to the life of Sunny Leone.

Sunny Leone is a name that is perhaps enveloped by controversy. Be it her links with the adult film industry, her participation in the reality TV show Bigg Boss or even the rumours doing the rounds about her. They all reek of scandal.

Despite her turbulent journey which was dotted with scandals at each crossroad, she found a place for herself in the entertainment industry, which cuts across reality shows, movies and television.

Her name, quite literally this time sparked up a controversy with a Sikh committee which has objected to the nomenclature of the title of the web series based on her life.

Here’s taking a look at how it all unfolded:

SUNNY LEONE OR KARENJIT KAUR?

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra to Sikh parents in Canada, Leone started off her career as a Porn Star in the USA. She later came to India and gained fame through the reality TV show Bigg Boss in 2011. This ultimately culminated in her Bollywood debut via Mahesh Bhatt’s Jism 2.

She subsequently became a part of mainstream cinema where she did movies like Ragini MMS 2, Ek Paheli Leela, Kuch Kuch Locha Hai etc.

She became affiliated to MTV channel where she hosted the reality entertainment show Splitsvilla for a few seasons.

WHAT IS HER WEB SERIES ALL ABOUT?

‘Karenjit Kaur: The Untold Story Of Sunny Leone’ is an Aditya Datt directorial venture which traces the story of Leone’s life from her beginnings as a Porn Star to what she is today in the Indian film industry.

The series premiered on Zee5 16th July onwards.

Leone posted on instagram about her upcoming web series

On being asked about the series this is what Datt had to say “It was really nice. Here I would like to thank Zee5 for allowing me to narrate the story my way. We were clear from the start that at no point we would whitewash Sunny Leone’s image.”

THE CONTROVERSY

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) objected to the use of ‘Kaur’ in the title of Leone’s biopic web series.

Daljit Singh Bedi, SGPC’s additional secretary and spokesperson reportedly told The Times of India, that “Kaur is a very respectable name given by Sikh Gurus to Sikh women. A person who didn’t follow the teachings of Sikh Gurus shouldn’t use the word Kaur as this could hurt Sikh religious feelings. Sikhs will not allow her to use it. She should tender a public apology.”

Similar feelings were expressed by the president of the Istri Akali Dal, Bibi Jagir Kaur,“ She is using the word ‘Kaur’ for making her biopic a success, unaware of the fact that same could hurt religious sentiments.”

WHY THIS IRRATIONAL QUESTIONING IS PROBLEMATIC

The SGPC community is angered by the usage of ‘Kaur’ in reference to the title of the web series which relates to the life of Sunny Leone.

However, they completely fail to acknowledge the fact that the name was given to her at birth and is in fact HER name.

The decisions that she has taken throughout her life, are hers. And they all form a part of who she is. The SGPC and Akali Dal aren’t vested with the authority to determine what occupation is morally fit for the name and what is not.

Changing the name will not change the facts of her life. It is already known what Leone’s history and birth name is. ‘Kaur’ is a name that she bore then and is a name that she bears now.

In an environment where so many issues are of immediate and grave importance, such issues of frivolity in the name of religion seem rather illogical.
