Shah Rukh’s Debut Role Was Of A Gay Fresher In An English Film, Do You Know Which One?

On Shah Rukh Khan’s 57th birthday, we are here to tell his fans that King Khan started his career with neither Deewana nor Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman but that his debut role was that of a gay fresher in an English telefilm.

Shah Rukh’s Original Debut Film

A true fan of the “Baadshah of Bollywood” will know that Shah Rukh Khan made his first appearance in Bollywood with Deewana in 1992, but originally Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman was the first film he signed for. Apparently, the release date for the latter was postponed.

However, neither of the above is his debut film.

Shah Rukh Khan kicked off his acting career with an English telefilm in 1989 titled, “In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones,” where he enacted the role of a gay undergrad, directed by Pradip Krishen and written by Arundhati Roy. This forgotten debut film of King Khan, produced by Doordarshan, was released even before Deewana and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman were scripted.

What Is The Movie About

Shah Rukh Khan’s debut film, “In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones,” tells the story of a boy named Anand (Annie) Grover, played by Arjun Rajna, who is an aspiring student of architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi.

Annie shares an estranged relationship with the headmaster, YD Bilimoria, played by Roshan Seth. Arundhati Roy was not only the writer of the film but she also enacted the role of the female protagonist, Radha.

Shah Rukh’s cameo was that of a gay sophomore intellectual talking in lengthy, breathless sentences. His voice sounded so unusual that a few of his admirers claim that it has been dubbed by somebody else and is not his original voice. He was seen in only two scenes, and the role he played also seemed very un-SRK-like.

Apart from the King of Bollywood, the film also starred another striving artist of that time: Manoj Bajpai. He was seen in a blink-and-miss walk-on.

Other prominent artists like Himani Shivpuri, Raghuvir Yadav, and Divya Seth also acted in the film.

Shah Rukh’s Emotions About His Debut Film

Shah Rukh Khan was still at the struggling point of his career in the theatres of Delhi when he made his debut in “In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones.” In a 1990s interview, SRK said that he felt on edge during the shoot of his debut film. It made him distinctly uneasy to play the character he was assigned, especially because he was told to make seductive gestures with his eyes.

Although the film never made it to the theatres but aired on Doordarshan, it was highly praised and bagged two National Awards: one for Best Feature Film in English and the other for Best Screenplay. This was Arundhati Roy’s only National Film Award.

It feels nostalgic to remember SRK’s original debut film on his 57th birthday. How far he’s come! From his two-scene appearance to being known as the King of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan has definitely marked his place in Bollywood and in the hearts of people all over the world.
