QuoraED: Should There Be No Holidays In Schools Across U.P. On Birth Anniversaries Of Great Personalities?

QuoraED, an ED Original content style. This is when we pick up a trending or interesting thread from Quora and spin a story around it.

Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath already started to deliver on his promises as soon as he assumed his office. But, quite recently he made an announcement that shook us all by surprise. The CM has advised all the primary schools in the state to cancel any holidays that are provided on the birth or death of great personalities.

So we went ahead to look for people’s opinion on this matter. Here’s what they had to say.

Not Everybody Can Be Like Yogi

He usually wakes up as early as 3 AM in the morning, offers his prayers and practices Yoga. He goes to bed at 11 pm. Thus he sleeps only for four hours. He seems to be working like this for all seven days in a week.

He also wants the officers of UP government to work like him without offering them any extra pay or any incentives. Soon after assuming charge, he had given a stern message to officials that those who were not prepared to work 18-20 hours a day were free to make way.

Yogi Ji must understand that everyone is not a Yogi and bachelor like him. Other people have families, friends, and relatives as well. They have to fulfill their other obligations as well in their life in addition to their official responsibilities.

India Almost Has 2 Months Of Holidays In A Year

We only have 365 days in a year. However, the number of great personalities in India are more than that. Should we celebrate the birth of Ashoka, Samudra Gupta, Shivaji, Akbar, Buddha, Mahavira, Patel, Nehru, Vivekananda, Tulsidas, Valmiki, Kabir, Tagore as well?

Besides the truly great personalities, we also have political leaders and every time a government comes in power they will try to add a leader from their side. It is a never ending story.

Instead, we should give 10 holidays that any student/worker can choose where they can be off. This way the students can really spend time with the extended family/community during native festivals they really care about.

He’s Following The Footsteps Of APJ Abdul Kalam

Don’t declare a holiday on my death, instead work an extra day, if you love me.

It is not a great idea to close schools on the occasion of birth or death anniversaries of great people. In fact, many times, children don’t even know why the school has been closed. This defeats the purpose of commemorating a holiday on the occasion

The first one is a quote by former President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and the second one is by current CM of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath.

Though said in different scenarios, they convey a similar message.

APJ Abdul Kalam said not to declare a holiday on his death, not because he wanted to ruin your holiday, but because he wanted to make working a habit among the people.

Likewise, Yogi Adityanath wants to instill this quality within the children. By not closing schools on birth and death anniversaries, children get to know about the great people who have influenced the world with their personalities. They get to admire and get motivated by these great people.

So, Yogi Adityanath has made a right decision.
