Football fans across the globe are psyched for this year’s FIFA World Cup to be held in Qatar. But the Middle Eastern country’s draconian laws can be a huge dampener for the excitement.
Strict rules have been imposed on all football fans, especially women, who plan to come from all over the world to watch the event that is starting from November 20. Women and men may face arrest for not conforming with the dress codes.
Jail Time For Scanty Clothes
The Qatar government has issued strict sartorial guidelines ahead of the FIFS World Cup, especially for women from international countries. Female football fans are restricted from donning scanty clothes or revealing attire.
By ‘scanty’ Qatar authorities mean women are not allowed to show their shoulders, knees, and cleavage, or wear tight clothes. Men also have been barred from taking off their shirts or wearing tank tops.
Harsh consequences have been announced for those who refuse to comply with the Islamic nation’s laws. Women and men face conviction and jail time in case of violation of the dress codes.
Qatar government’s tourism website noted, “Attitudes towards dressing in Qatar are relaxed, but visitors (men as well as women) are expected to show respect for the local culture by avoiding excessively revealing clothes in public”.

Spectators at the stadium will be closely monitored via 15,000 high-tech cameras with facial recognition technology.
Niyas Abdul Rahman, the World Cup’s chief technology officer, said, “We have high-resolution special cameras to zoom in on a particular seat and clearly see the spectator”. He added, “It’s being recorded, so that will help us in any post-event investigation.”
Criticism
The Qatar FIFA World Cup is the first ever to be hosted by a Middle Eastern nation. Yet it has received the most scrutiny for its hardliner rules imposed on football fans. It has been involved in various issues such that calls have been made to boycott the World Cup. Qatar has already been called the worst host of the football World Cup till date.
The FIFA website, while stating that people are at freedom to wear what they want, at the same time contradicts their policy. It is also mentioned that women need to pay heed to the strict laws of Qatar.
With the Ecuadorian team set to face the host team of Qatar, people are predicting that very few women will go to visit the World Cup live while risking legal prosecution.
