New research shows how Indian Muslim women face discrimination during the hiring process. According to a study done by Ledby Foundation, Muslim women are found to be at an unfair disadvantage against non-Muslim women when it comes to entry-level jobs across various industries.
The founder of the foundation- Dr. Ruha Shada stated that the motivation for this study was born out of listening to many unconfirmed stories of Muslim women facing unfair discrimination when trying to join the workforce.
The outcome of the study has provided hard facts to these anecdotal stories confirming that is quite true. This data can now be taken to people who possess the power to implement corrective action for this unfair treatment of our fellow Muslim sisters.
While Priyanka received many callbacks, Habiba received only one follow-up call. It was also found that recruiters behave more cordially in Priyanka’s case.
The report stated that the results of the study were statistically significant enough to indicate that Muslim women face a lot of closed doors when it comes to applying for jobs for no reason.
Rituparna Chakraborty, the Co-Founder and Executive Director of TeamLease says that she has not yet come across any such incident in the private sector. Chakraborty also entertains the idea that the sample population could have been chosen differently leading to possibly different outcomes as well.
