Neeraj Chopra set a new national record, beating his previous record by more than a meter with his second throw in an international competition since the momentous Tokyo night. His attempt was 89.30 meters.
The javelin cut through the sunny sky in Turku, Finland, on Tuesday, when Chopra made his much-awaited return to international competition. Turku is regarded as the spiritual birthplace of the javelin throw. He raised both of his arms in celebration, same like during his throw in Tokyo.

Chopra’s first throw covered a distance of 86.92 meters, but he was unable to make a valid throw on his third, fourth, or fifth tries. He eventually finished with a throw of 85.85 meters.
However, the outcome may serve as a huge confidence booster before the World Championships later this month and an indication that he is on the correct path to breaking the legendary 90-meter barrier.
The enormous throw helped him achieve the second position on the podium at the Paavo Nurmi Games right after Oliver Helander, who made a personal best throw of 89.93m. With a throw of 86.60 meters, world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada came in third.
The fifth-best throw by an athlete this year was made by Chopra on Tuesday, covering 89.30 metres. As of 2016, he has held the record for the men’s javelin throw at the national level.
At the South Asian Games in Guwahati in 2016, he made his first attempt at the national record when he matched Rajinder Singh’s performance of 82.23m on the way to winning gold.
Despite missing over 10 months of competition, Neeraj Chopra appeared fit and competition-ready – also he broke his own record!
