Music’s in the air: The Inside Story Of Ram Sampath And Sona Mohapatra

Ram Sampath and Sona Mohapatra met in 2002 and got married within three years and it doesn’t come as a shock to any fan that what set the ball rolling was their mutual love for music.

Main kaliyon ke jaisi meri alhad umar nirali,
Choti si ye jaan meri aur joban behta paani,

These lines from the song, Ambarsariya from the movie Fukrey has enticed every music lover to sing along. Be it the catchy lyrics, the refreshing music or the soulful singing, you can’t just help listening to it over and over again, and the credit for it goes to none other than Bollywood’s own musical couple, Ram Sampath and Sona Mohapatra, the composer and the singer of this song respectively.

This beautiful couple met in 2002 and got married within three years and it doesn’t come as a shock to any fan that what set the ball rolling was their mutual love for music.

While Ram has been active in the Mumbai advertising circuit from 1997 onwards, the opportunity to compose music for the multi-starrer movie Khakee in 2004, is what paved the way for him into filmdom.

However he is best known for his work in Delhi Belly, the most controversial yet thoroughly entertaining movie of 2011 for which he received numerous awards. Also, the 14 tracks that he composed for the TV show Satyamev Jayate, many of which have been sung by Sona herself have touched the hearts of millions of viewers.

While Ram always knew he wanted to be a part of the music industry, Sona’s entry into this line was unexpected to say the least. She has completed her engineering and MBA, and was working as a brand manager in Marico when she met Ram.

And to quote him,the strong, independent streak in her is what attracted me most. While I’m an illiterate fool, she was a strong, career-oriented girl and I liked that.

Her debut album Sona, on Sony Records was released in 2007 and explored diverse styles of Rock, Blues and Romani music of which Ram himself was the composer. Her jingle for the brand Close Up, Paas Aao Na has been recorded in several languages and aired across 13 countries for 4 consecutive years!

Aamir Khan fell in love with her voice when the song Bedardi Raja from Delhi Belly became a rage and the subsequent songs that she did for Satyamev Jayate, especially Mujhe Kya Bechega Rupaiya has received over 5 million hits on Youtube!

Ram and Sona are partners in their music production house OmGrown Music and reside in Mumbai currently.

Although both of them have worked with various different artists, I believe that they are at their best when they are together. Their personal chemistry and understanding transcends into their professional life as well.

The fact that these two complete each other cannot be questioned as evident from their impressive body of work.

Guess that’s how a couple is supposed to be! Having said that, I believe they haven’t yet reached the peak of success and being an ardent fan myself, I know they have much more than what it takes to get there.

Looking forward to some great work in the future also.
