Misconceptions About The “Introverted”

Saying things like “you should be more social” is something introverts have heard all their life and honestly, it can be a little annoying.

There are so many types of personalities we come across every day, some are like us while some couldn’t be any more different. The most common personality types known to us are Introverts and Extroverts.

They are fairly easy to spot because of the clear distinction in behavior.

Although, introverts are often the misunderstood bunch because they are not what one expects and are always compared to extroverts.

Here are some common misconceptions about introverts that are best described as stereotypical.

Introverted

Introverts don’t talk

This is the most common misconception people have about introverts and it’s completely false. Introverts are talkative but they just need some time to feel comfortable around someone before they can openly share their ideas and thoughts.

Once the introverted person feels comfortable in your presence they will talk so much that you might not get a chance to speak at all. While they like deep and meaningful conversations but when it comes to small talk they stumble a little.

Introverts are shy

People forget that ‘introversion’ and ‘shyness’ are two different concepts and not one and the same. Introverted people can be shy but it should not be generalized because not all introverts are shy and not all shy people are introverts.

Being shy is basically a reaction to social interaction. I have met introverts who are in a way outgoing but have trouble showing their emotions to the people they don’t know well enough.

Introverts are angry, sad or depressed

As an introvert myself, I have been asked by many people if my being quiet has anything to do with me being sad. Sorry, but I don’t understand where this connection comes from.

Just because I speak less according to a person it does not mean I am sad or even angry. Wanting to be alone to recharge or spend time with oneself doesn’t mean that there is something wrong with me.

For introverts being around people all the time can be exhausting and they need to take time for themselves to recalibrate.

Introverts can become ‘extroverts’

Some people also feel that introversion is a choice made by an individual. They don’t realize that it’s just the way some people are, it’s who they are and not something they choose to be; though there might be exceptions.

Saying things like “you should be more social” is something introverts have heard all their life and honestly, it can be a little annoying. Trying to change one’s personality by asking them to be more social is simply not going to work out.

These misconceptions make the already socially wary introverts to worry even more. Introversion is not a personality problem that needs fixing; they simply think differently and react differently than one expects them to and that is okay.

Next time when you meet an introvert make sure they feel comfortable around you then you’ll see how different they are than what the stereotypes make them out to be. In conclusion, to each their own, right?
