Life Skills They Don’t Teach In Schools Series: How To Choose A Career?

Choose the right career!

Choosing a career that interests you and instigates pleasure is important. Then only you can not only enjoy it but also accomplish your goals effortlessly. Hence, choosing the right career path will take you a long way.

Making the right choice is the most important decision in one’s life

Currently, our education system focuses on children’s cognitive development with an emphasis on transmitting content knowledge. It emphasizes memorizing and repeating in the same way it was received.

But education should not be just about mugging up textbooks and pouring it all on exam transcripts. It should be about a child’s holistic development. Schools should give a child space to grow focus on their individual, emotional, personal development.

Apart from this, I believe a school should train students for the real-life they are headed towards. From a very young age, they should be encouraged towards a certain career path that interests them, and they should be molded towards it.

Step one: Schools Should Encourage A Student To Self Assess Themselves

Schools should ask students the following questions: What subject one enjoys studying at school and beyond, and why? What subjects have they done well at, and why?

To find out more about one’s personal qualities and strengths schools should make their students take career aptitude tests. Career aptitude tests or self-assessment tests can help make career choices based on your traits, or qualities.

Steps to choosing a career. Focus on your goal!

Schools can give students writing exercises where they have to write about the five or six most important life and work skills they already have – and which ones they want to build and focus on. Which skill comes easiest to them out of communication, self-management, self-belief, teamwork, and problem-solving?

Every career needs these skills, but some more than others. Sales, nursing, teaching, and investigative reporting careers need you to be great at communication. Being a sports coach or a firefighter needs you to have a level of fitness.

Step 2: Creating A List Of Interested And Potential Career Choices

Make a list of career choices you are interested in. Try to choose careers that match your qualifications and if you are genuinely interested then stay motivated and strive towards it.

Step 3: Choosing The Path For The Career You Are Opting For

There’s no one set path to a career destination, whatever career one chooses. Make a list of multiple career paths. You can go to university or can start working early.

Step 4: Conduct Informational Interviews

Schools can bring in professionals from different fields and hold seminars where students can address their questions and queries. They can provide firsthand knowledge about the careers on your shortlist.

Then one on one interviews can be held, which will be more informative and students can clear their doubts more clearly and make an informed decision.

Step 5: Career Counselling

Career counseling sessions are extremely effective. It’s more personal. Students can talk freely once they know it’s a safe environment and their conversations will be confidential. Career counselors can guide the students and help them understand what they are interested in and what will excel in them.

Remember: Career satisfaction, as well as happiness, is also important!

Step 6: Giving Students Internship Or Volunteering Opportunities

Schools can give students internships or volunteer work in the respected fields they are interested in. The work experience, connections, and insight into the job will not only be invaluable but will give students first-hand experience which in turn will make it easier for them to choose the right career.

If they do not like the actual work experience in a particular field they can even change it and find a better-suited career for themselves.

We have to remember that choosing the right career is very important. And if schools start mentoring students from a young age, about career paths then they’ll not make mistakes when it comes to choosing their career.

They’ll be motivated to work more if they are interested in the field. It will give them success and career satisfaction. And that will make them happy because going to work will not be a task for them, they’ll look forward to it, they’ll enjoy it.
