Kolkata Sees A Rise In Electrification Of Public Transportation

The popularity of electric vehicles are rising by the day. Not only is it eco-sustainable, but it is also pocket friendly.

At the time of writing this article, Kolkata sees petrol prices at ₹106.03/L. Amidst the rising fuel prices, the state government brings some good news for vehicle owners and commuters in the city of Kolkata.

The WB government recently announced its plan to introduce 1200 electric buses in a phased manner over the next 3 years. To put things into perspective, currently, the city has only 80 operational electric buses.

The government promises to bump that number up to 125 by July. The plan is to run all the state-funded buses in Kolkata on either CNG or electricity in Kolkata. State Transport Minister Firhad Hakim further aims to do the same across all private bus operators in the city.

It seems that the days of polluting diesel-operated buses are coming to a close as the Government takes several additional measures to curb pollution and aid in the reduction of the city’s carbon footprint.

With the oil fields diminishing by the day and air pollution rising by the hour, electrification of public and private transport is truly the need of the hour.

The West Bengal Government in an attempt to encourage the public, has further provided relief to vehicle owners via the exemption of registration fees and various taxes when citizens choose to own electric or CNG vehicles between April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2024.

With the increased effort of the government, the inhabitants of the City of Joy can now hope to breathe easier both literally and figuratively as it rides the State’s all-electric push.
