Karnataka: A Dustbin Can Put On A Teacher’s Head On The Name Of “Prank”, How Far Will Harassment Go?

A 59-year-old Hindi teacher at a government high school in Channagiri town of Davanagere district has been harassed by class 10 students. Despite the manhandling, the teacher did not lodge a formal complaint.

The Incident

According to reports, the teacher has disciplined the students after seeing gutka packets littered on the floor. Afterward, four students surrounded the teacher and verbally assaulted him. The viral video circulated on social media shows that one of the students put an empty dustbin can on his head.

The teacher was very calm and tried to dissuade them from any further nuisance. But they kept on repeating their verbal assaults and threatening him.

He initially did not complain as it would have negatively impacted the future of those students. He forgave them, considering it as a frivolous mistake. But the viral video garnered attention from the netizens and Karnataka Education Ministry.

The district education department in Davanagere has lodged a formal police complaint against the four students.

The viral video shows the harassment of the teacher by the students.

Funny Being Violent

Many netizens are pointing out how the students in the class did not say anything in the situation? Is the so-called prank normalized amongst the peer groups?

Ridiculing teachers to share memes about their private lives and constantly making fun of their physical features has become a trend nowadays. The verbal and physical assault on the Hindi teacher alludes to the concept of “fun”, but essentially it is a disguise for the violent impulses of students.

Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, BC Nagesh has tweeted regarding the incident,

“Assault on the teacher by students at a school in Channagiri taluk of Davanagere district cannot be tolerated. Education Department and police probing the matter. Instructed to take appropriate action. We’ll always be with teachers.”

Ridiculing teachers on their faces has become a habit of students these days.

Mental Health Of The Teacher

The youth has been advocating the importance of mental health in contemporary society. The harassment of the Hindi teacher comes as a shock. So is the psychological wellbeing of youth more paramount than the elderly?

The teacher already had existing health problems and was disturbed by this act from the students he taught with so much compassion and dedication.

His son Deepak B said, “My father is very disturbed by this incident and is not in a position to speak to anyone. Authorities should ensure such incidents are not repeated.”

The school faculty is supporting the teacher. The administration has given him a choice to transfer to a school of his choice if he wants to.

Despite the measures, it will still leave a scar on him. We, as the youth, should stop this kind of behavior at every level, be it ridiculing teachers or indirectly passing comments on them.
