Watch: India’s Pigeon Police Service: The World’s Last Surviving Pigeon Post

Pigeon post has become an ornamental relic of the past but India’s Pigeon Police Service has firmly stood the vicissitudes of time.

Introduced in the immediate wake of the Second World War at Odisha’s Koraput district, pigeon mail continued to be the vital link in ferrying messages delivering as many as 4,079 messages in 1991 with the number rising to 5,074 in 1993.

The Pigeon Carrier Service shot into the limelight when a homing pigeon was used to deliver a message by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru from Sambhalpur to Cuttack.

Jawaharlal Nehru was mighty impressed by the five and a half hour delivery carrying the brief message,

“The arrangement for the public meeting should not be such as to separate the speaker too much from the audience”.
