In Pics: 7 Good Things That Have Happened In 2020 So Far

All over the world everyone is cursing this year to be the worst of all, from pandemic to
cyclones and earthquakes, it seems like these dreadful things keep coming at us one after
the other.

But just like the concept of ‘yin and yang’ there is a little good even in worst of things.

Some of us even used this quarantined period to rekindle with ourselves and strengthen the bonds with our families and loved ones.

Here is a list of all the things that might bring back your hope during this time:

1. Same-sex marriage legalized in Costa Rica

The President of the country, Carlos Alvarado congratulated the couple saying, “you
have begun in law what has existed in love.” Costa Rica is the sixth country in Latin
America to do so.

The legalization of same-sex marriage is one step further in realizing full and equal rights for all of the LGBTQ community.

2. Another person was cured of HIV

The first person to be cured was known as the ‘Berlin patient’ and the second one is known as the ‘London patient’, both received a bone marrow transplant from a rare genetic mutation that confers resistance to the disease.

The case is monumental as doctors are now more hopeful that the disease does indeed have a cure. Both the patients received the transplant of bone marrow for cancer rather than HIV specifically and the first one was a complete fluke.

3. Pollution levels dropped significantly

When the entire world was quarantined because of a pandemic, the planet received a breath of fresh air. Pollution levels dropped significantly all over the world as transports and businesses were stopped.

Just in 2019, the air quality levels had stooped so low that it was declared as a health emergency. All we did was sit at home and the climate changed drastically, just imagine if we consciously put an effort toward the cause we can save a great deal of damage.

4. Bush-fires in Australia finally stopped

Australia had been facing bush-fires non-stop since the last few months but it stopped recently with heavy rains. The fire had killed 28 people, devastated thousands of houses and affected millions of animals.

The fire service of the state of New South Wales described it as the “most positive news we’ve had in some time.”

5. First cheetah cubs were born through in-vitro fertilization (IVF)

Two baby cheetah cubs were born through IVF to a surrogate mother. This could aid the endangered species and create the healthiest population genetically in human care.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature had declared the species to be near extinction with just 7500 of them left.

6. A few places are now free of COVID-19

While we are all still gripped in fear due to the pandemic, a few places free of the corona virus show a silver lining for the future.

Lakshadweep having zero cases is a major achievement since they rely on Kerala for most of their medical needs.

Besides New Zealand, Tanzania, Fiji, Vatican City, Montenegro, Seychelles, St. Kitts & Nevis, Timor-Leste, and Papua New Guinea have cured the last people detected with coronavirus in their countries.

7. Fossil of a modern-day bird was discovered

The preserved skull of the ancestor of modern-day chickens and ducks was found and it is so old that the bird probably walked among dinosaurs. The discovery of “wonder chicken” can help unveil mysteries of the evolution of modern-day birds and some of the cretaceous period too.

To get through these challenging times remember there is always a silver lining even when you can’t see it clearly.

These 7 things are just the ray of hope we need to restore our faith in the rest of the year.
