In the NSF International Household Germ Study, scientists tested the most basic household items accessible all over the world.
In the study, researchers swabbed 30 common items found in the households of 22 volunteer families, from the USA.
The results of the experiment were shockingly unexpected.
The research revealed that Coliform bacteria- Salmonella and Escherichia coli—are signs of potential faecal contamination and poisoning, and were observed in 81% of the volunteering households.
Yeast and mould, which are types of funguses and can make you extremely sick, were found in the homes of 31% of the volunteering families.
Finally, researchers also detected Staphylococcus aureus in more than 5% of the households.
