How Well Does The ZuckOff App Work To Detect Pervert Smart Glasses?

-

The pervert (sorry, smart) glasses trend has become something of a menace. What started as a niche gadget that felt almost futuristic is now a real problem, with big corporations shoving it down the public’s throat and influencers and celebrities happily endorsing it.

The biggest problem with these glasses is privacy, particularly the risk of people being filmed without their consent.

Sure, one could argue that phones already have cameras. But it’s far easier to spot someone recording you on a phone than someone wearing glasses that could be filming the whole time.

People have since come up with small ways to spot or dodge these glasses, and the latest addition to the list is an app called ZuckOff.

What Is The ZuckOff App?

ZuckOff was built by Pawel Szydlowski, a 30-year-old Polish software developer, who launched it on Apple’s App Store in August 2026.

The name is a play on ‘F*ck Off’, slang for angrily telling someone to get lost, with a nod to Mark Zuckerberg. Fitting, considering how many people feel about smart glasses.

Smart glasses give off Bluetooth signals, and according to the app’s official site, “ZuckOff listens for that and tells you when Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, Snap Spectacles or similar hardware is nearby.”

Szydlowski, speaking to Business Insider, said, “There’s a need for such an application,” adding, “We as a society have the right to at least know that someone is recording.”

According to reports, Szydlowski bought several models of smart glasses and studied their Bluetooth signals, or their Bluetooth “fingerprint.”

He found that these devices broadcast unique identifiers, with some even naming their Bluetooth services “Meta” or “Ray-Ban.”

The app compares these identifiers, along with the manufacturer identifier and other data, to check whether they match a known pair of smart glasses.

Szydlowski explained, “If the unique identifier matches, and also if the manufacturer identifier matches, then we have like an ultimate combo there.”

But Does It Actually Work?

While ZuckOff has been praised for what it does, critics have pointed out its limitations. For starters, it only detects a nearby Bluetooth device; it can’t tell whether the smart glasses are actually recording. It also can’t tell which direction the signal is coming from, at least not yet.

The app itself acknowledges on its App Store page that camera glasses give off the strongest signal when they are powering on, pairing, or leaving their case.

Once paired with the wearer’s phone, however, they can go quiet. So if the app doesn’t detect a pair nearby, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any around, or that no one is recording.

Similarly, the app detecting camera glasses doesn’t mean someone is recording with them.

Then there’s the false-positive problem, which similar apps have run into as well.

Reports point to another app, Nearby Glasses, which faces the same issue. Its developer, Yves Jeanrenaud, warned that it may be prone to false positives, as it can mistake a nearby Meta VR headset for a pair of smart glasses, since both come from the same manufacturer and share Bluetooth signatures.
