Here Is Why China Is Praising India, Quite Surprisingly So!

Since its 1948 independence from the United Kingdom, Sri Lanka has seen tremendous economic turbulence.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka has sparked political upheaval for months, culminating in the removal of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. The island nation is also dealing with a serious foreign currency shortage, which has made it difficult to import basic necessities.

Sri Lanka, earlier this month, received 3.3 tonnes of critical medical supplies from India as aid. These humanitarian supplies are part of the Indian government’s continued support for the people of the crisis-plagued island nation, which includes financial aid, FX assistance, material supplies, and other forms of help.

More than 25 tonnes of medications and medical equipment provided by the Indian government and citizens in the previous two months are valued at close to SLR 370 million, in keeping with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

China praised India’s efforts to aid Sri Lanka in dealing with its biggest financial crisis on Wednesday, but denied President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s claims that Beijing has changed its strategic focus from South Asia, particularly Pakistan, to South East Asia, saying the area remains a priority.

Zhao Lijian, a spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said during a press conference here in response to a question about whether China, which has made significant investments in Sri Lanka, is hesitant to assist the island nation as it faces its greatest economic crisis.

He said during a press briefing that China ‘commends’ India’s efforts to resolve the Sri Lankan situation. He praised India by saying, “We have taken note that the Indian government has also done a lot in this regard. We commend those efforts. China is ready to work with India and the rest of the international community to help Sri Lanka and other developing countries experiencing difficulty to pull through the hardship as early as possible.”

He also added that South Asia remains to be a priority in the eyes of the Chinese government.
