Haryana Villages To Have House Nameplates With Only Girl’s Name

The gloomy past record of having one of the lowest sex ratio numbers in India makes it really important for the Haryana administration to consistently adopt countermeasures as well as common people to unlearn unacceptable patriarchal norms to be able to improve gender equality in the state.

However, now it seems like people in Haryana are gradually trying to come to terms with this shortcoming and doing their bit in breaking the unethical shackles made for the female gender.

Nameplate With Daughter’s Name

People in several villages of Haryana are taking an unprecedented step of putting the name of their daughters on nameplates of their houses and propagating an inspiring message throughout India.

The villagers have been doing this applaudable task under the ‘laado swabhiman’ initiative.

Laado Swabhiman‘ was started by Sunil Jaglan, the former sarpanch of Bibipur village in Jind. Sunil Jaglan has also the ‘selfie with daughter’ initiative to his credit which also earned recognition and praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Thousands of houses in villages like Kirori, Nuh, Alipur, etc. have installed the nameplates and more are in the line.

Recently, the Kirori village achieved the milestone of having every house be a part of the ‘laado swabhiman‘ campaign.

On this, Sunil Jaglan said, “Kirori has become the first village in the state and the country where each house has a nameplate with the names of daughters. While similar initiatives have been carried out across the country earlier, this is the first time it has been done on this scale and with uniformity.”

Some Other Inspirations

Interestingly, besides this initiative, several other reasons have compelled people to take part in such a drive.

For instance, in the Charkhi Dadri district near Rohtak, people said that they drew inspiration from the movie ‘Dangal’ which was based on the journey of the Phogat sisters of Haryana.

The unconventional action has had its influence pervading in states besides Haryana as well. In UP’s Muzaffarpur district also, people have put nameplates with their daughters’ names mentioned on it.

A similar campaign was run by the Department of Women and Child Development which also inspired people to do this.

Having their name mentioned broadly on the nameplate must be giving girls a sense of respect, recognition and acceptance. In a bid to take the notion of women empowerment a notch higher, initiatives like ‘laado swabhiman‘ will go a long way.

Undoubtedly, not only in Haryana, the thought behind such actions must be perceived well across the nation for the wholesome betterment of the female population.
