Gary Johnson’s Aleppo Incident: What Exactly Are These Politicians Doing?

Politicians are never the favourite of any one frankly.

For being the representatives of a state or country and its people, it actually seems like politicians make more goof-ups than would be expected of them.

I will be honest, and say that when it comes to politics I do not really have that much of a vested interest in it. But even still, I do keep up to date with the major going on in the world, and till some time back thought that politicians, considering their rank and position, would absolutely know everything about the world.

But apparently, I was wrong, as over the years, I have been faced with the fact that although it is expected of politicians to be in the know-how of the current events, but it is not a rule that is always carried out.

The latest one to join in major political goof-ups was Gary Johnson, whose absurd and frankly downright insulting comments and question of what exactly is Aleppo, was extremely disappointing, especially from a presidential candidate.

Although the very fact that he does not know or does not have adequate information on Aleppo is alarming, considering the state that city is in, but more alarming was his reaction to the question put forth by the interviewer.

For those who don’t know, Aleppo is a Syrian city that has been in a state of war for more than 4 years now. Aleppo is one of the largest city in Syria and was once the most prominent places with it being the industrial and financial centre. But around 2011-12 they staged an uprising against President Bashar-al-Assad.

Since then, Aleppo has been in a constant state of upheaval with battles going on literally every day and the casualty rate ranging around quarter million.

And I would just like to say that it is fine if we normal citizens are not fully aware of what the situation is like at Aleppo, it would be good if we do know, but it is not a necessity. However when it comes to politicians, the knowledge of such a long battle in the world, discussed on most major international platforms, is necessary.

Johnson though, it is not the first politician to make such a big goof-up and will definitely not be the last.

We have such shining examples of politicians here in India too, with Rahul Gandhi the king of memes, and along with him, several other politicians, who have made quite embarrassing and insensitive comments and that too, on a very public platform, like rallies and conferences and such.

Indian politicians have blamed almost everything under the sun for all the wrongs happening in the society at the moment. From chowmein resulting in rape, to commenting on turning everything vegan and what not, but they will never really acknowledge that the problem is within the system itself.

Anyways, that is not the point I am trying to make here.

What I do want to focus on, is the fact that such goof-ups not only reflect poorly on these politicians, but also on the people that vote for them.

And more than that, it is a testament to how lightly these people take such an important job, that they do not even think before speaking.

Signing off, I would just like all the you politicians to think back and take a moment, before blurting whatever is on your mind.

You represent not just yourself, but an entire community, state and country, and so should take better care of wording your statements at the very least, in such a way, where one does not come out looking like a fool.
