Game Of Thrones ‘The Queen’s Justice:’ ED Review

Statutory spoiler warning for those who haven’t watched Episode three of Game of Thrones Season 7.

‘The Bastard of Winterfell’ – Tyrion

‘The Dwarf of Casterly Rock’ – Jon

The hype was real.

It’s always great to have fan favorites meet on a show such as Game of Thrones. I remember whooping the last time it happened when Tyrion met with Dany (‘Hardhome,’ arguably the greatest Game of Thrones episode in its entire run). I whooped this evening (or late night, if you are an owl like me) too, when Jon and Dany finally came to meet. And I was satisfied, if maybe a tad worried.

Here are some of my takeaways from this week’s episode ‘The Queen’s Justice.’

I HAVE BOUGHT FIRE AND ICE TOGETHER – MELISANDRE

Dany: Have you come here to bend the knee.

Jon: No, I have not

Dany: *puzzled* Wait, what??

I mentioned this in one of my earlier reviews but, I so love it when characters on Game of Thrones talk. Just talk. I miss the days of the early seasons when every sentence could be deconstructed and analyzed, a time when unpredictability was a viable currency of this wonderful show. But, this long interaction comes close.

We know Jon, and we know Dany. And we know their motivations so clearly that we understand both of their arguments, even as we might take sides against one of them. It’s great to see a show that prides itself on its characters’ intrigue and unpredictability lay bare all these character motivations openly so openly. Better yet, there are small doses of humor here and there too.

I did have a few concerns with the scene though. First off, it reflects a tad poorly on your fan favorite characters Jon and Dany when they share a scene with great characters such as Tyrion and Ser Davos. The latter two are the ones who make the scene, not the King with the bad persuasive skills, nor the entitled, whiny Queen with three dragons.

Secondly, was it me or did anyone else catch the hints at Jon-Dany shipping in their interactions? I so don’t want to see that. I so don’t want to. Sure, it would please a lot of fans but, it would be a great disservice to what makes this show so great and watchable.

JAIME F*CKIN’ LANNISTER

For the greatest natural swordsman of his time, it’s a shame that we never saw Jaime Lannister truly go wild when he had both his hands. I really would have loved to see him parry with the likes of Robb Stark (Which the show cut from the Battle of Whispering Woods in Season 1). It’s a joy then to see Tywin Lannister’s heir truly become his father by routing Highgarden and surrounding the Unsullied at Casterly Rock.

Jaime this week had a great scene with Lady Olenna [RIP Lady Olenna :( , the seven kingdoms shall miss your dry wit), looked great in his Lannister armor and got some ‘love’ from Cersei. Good week for anyone who had Jaime on their Fantasy team this week.

JAIME, EURON OUTWIT TYRION AND BATTLE TEASES GALORE

After that opening scene, it was hard for me to decide who is the better Hand, Ser Davos or Tyrion. Perhaps, it’s still too early for that discussion. This week, however, Ser Davos takes the cake. Not only does Ser Davos put an end to wherever Dany and Jon’s conversation was going but, Tyrion screws up too. Remember his grand plan to take Casterly Rock? Well, the Unsullied did take The Rock. Except, their naval armada is almost destroyed by Westeros’ Jack Sparrow and Dany has lost their richest ally, the Tyrells. It’s okay, Lord Tyrion. Things will look up.

I didn’t expect Highgarden to fall this week. I did expect Casterly Rock to do so though. And both together had a screen time of less than ten minutes. I was looking forward to this significant battle sequence, and it didn’t come. There was even an alternate battle tease in there. Shame. But then again, this is the Unsullied we are talking about. Remember how shitty they were at their job in Meereen? And Grey Worm not see an attack on the armada until it was too late? I blame Missandei.

CERSEI IS WINNING THE WAR OF THE QUEENS

Well, that isn’t turning out as most of us had thought now, didn’t we? Don’t get me wrong, Cersei is an infinitely better character than Dany any day but yes, there was an inevitability to how we expected this season to go forward. Not so easily, it would seem, however. Cersei has destroyed the Greyjoy fleet, taken the Sand Snakes and has taken the seat of the Tyrells. Dany, if you’re listening, spend less time on ridiculously long titles and instead, work on winning this war.

I still think that Lena Headey is overdoing the villainous, malevolent act a tad this season. But, her scene with the Sand Snakes this week is truly terrifying. I wouldn’t want to be on her bad side.

As for the other villain Euron, he has been the most productive character this season. He has a certain charm about him and, he is funny actually but, what a dirty tongue that. I look forward to seeing Jaime mounting Euron’s head on a spike one day.

A few additional thoughts,

  • So, Bran is back at Winterfell. And, he meets Sansa (Who seems to be well suited to leadership). Yayyy, right? Well, no. Turns out the new three-eyed raven has third class social skills. I get why he spoke of that night but seriously, talking in accurate detail of the night when Sansa was raped isn’t exactly a conversation starter.
  • Lady Olenna went out like a champion. Calling Joffrey a c*nt, proudly telling Jaime of her role in his death, everything. We’ll miss you, my Lady.
  • ‘You poor fool. She’ll be the end of you. She’s a disease’ – Lady Olenna, about Cersei.

I agree, and that is a shame. As someone who has placed a lot of faith in Jaime being the Valonqar, I really don’t want to see his love for her cost, Jaime, his life. The opposite, in fact. If only.

  • So, Dany has allowed Jon to mine Dragonstone. Ohkay?
  • I love how relatable Tyrion is. Not only does he not let people forget about what happened in the past (Ser Davos, about the Battle of Blackwater) but, he also tends to present his own statements as ancient and universal wisdom.
  • Sam has cured Ser Jorah’s Greyscale. As a reward, he has been promoted from potty-cleaning to note-taking.
  • This week also sees the best rendition of ‘The Rains of Castamere’ I can remember.

This week’s episode ‘The Queen’s Justice’ continues the strong run Game of Thrones has been having this season. A few niggles here and there, and a few worrying signs in the future apart, this was a great episode.

Here’s the preview for next week. Until then, Hodor.

  1. I agree with your criticisms of the Dany-Jon meeting. It was good overall, but she was acting overly obnoxious and he was acting scared and incompetent. They both felt weirdly out of character; thank God for Davos and Tyrion rescuing the scene.

RIP Olenna. Arguably no actor fit their character as well on this show as Diana Rigg.
