Friendly Fridays Chapter 26: International Choreographer Sandip Soparrkar

We’re back with another very interesting Friendly Fridays edition.

And it’s Sandip Soparrkar on ED this time.

Sandip - 12

Only those living under a rock would need his introduction, but nonetheless, here goes an extremely abridged version of it.

The Queen of England & The Prince of Wales have written personal letters of appreciation to Sandip for promoting Ballroom dance culture in India. Sandip performed at the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton at Buckingham Palace.

In 2013 and 2014 he was invited to the Red Carpet at 66th and 67th Cannes Film Festival.

Sandip’s international students include Madonna, Shakira, Beyonce, Kenny G, Britney Spears etc.

Some Indian stars who have learnt from him are Priyanka Chopra, Aishwarya Rai, Preity Zinta, Hrithik Roshan amongst many others.

He has choreographed Hollywood film ‘Nine’ with Penelope Cruz, ‘The Myth’ with Jackie Chan, French Film ‘Join the Dance’, ‘Zubeidaa’ with Karishma Kapoor, ‘Kyon Ho Gaya Na’ with Aishwarya Rai, ‘Mangal Pandey’ with Aamir Khan, ‘Kites’ with Hrithik Roshan and various other big banner movies.

His most talked about performance include Madonna’s 50th birthday party & Katy Perry & Russell Band’s Wedding.

ED caught up with Sandip for a quick chat on some fun things in his life:

Team ED: 3 words that describe you the best?

Sandip Soparrkar: Happy-Go-Lucky. That’s 3 words.

Team ED: Life in a metro or a non main-stream city?

Sandip Soparrkar: Metro, most definitely. I am used to a high paced life and can balance it well.

Team ED: If you could choreograph any one Bollywood pair, which one would be your favourite and why?

Sandip Soparrkar: Madhuri Dixit and Shahid Kapoor. They are both great dancers. Even Hrithik is a phenomenal dancer, we all know that. But I would personally love to make Madhuri and Shahid do some Latin American Dance. Her attempt at Latin American Dancing in Jhalak Dikhla Ja was crap and 98% Bollywood-ish.

Team ED: What would we find Sandip doing had he not been an International Dancing Superstar?

Sandip Soparrkar: Reading mythology especially Greek and African.

Team ED: What will we generally find in your browser history?

Sandip Soparrkar: Dance videos from various cultures and countries, their costumes, music, instruments, dance forms. I’m not too friendly with technology.

Team ED: Guess we can go on and on with our questions, but we’d like to keep it short and sweet for this time. Thanks Sandip for your time, was great chatting with you. Hope to see you again very soon.

Sandip Soparrkar: Thanks guys for having me on ED.

Friendly Fridays’ going to be back again next week with another fun tete-a-tete.

Till next time, Adios!
