FlippED: Is The Reservation Benefitting The “Undeserving” Or Guaranteeing Social Justice?

FlippED is an ED Original style wherein two bloggers come together to share their opposing or orthogonal perspectives on an interesting subject.

Reservation is an affirmative action scheme in India that gives historically underrepresented communities representation in education, jobs, and politics.

Based on clauses in the Indian Constitution, it permits the Indian government to create reserved quotas or seats for “socially and educationally disadvantaged persons,” lowering the standards required in examinations, job vacancies, and so on.

But is it fair and just for the people to enjoy reservation in all the sectors of the Indian Society? Does it really ensure social justice or promotes inequality and the undeserving ones?

So, here I am, along with a fellow blogging buddy, to express our opinions on the issue.

BLOGGER PALAK’S OPINION-

“Reservation guarantees social justice and uplifts the underprivileged”

Roots In The Past

One can trace the roots of reservations back in history. It’s not something that has started just now; it has been prevailing in India for a very long time. The harsh caste system prevailing in India that guarantees all the rights for the upper caste has forced the nation to bring a reservation policy.

I feel reservation guarantees social justice to the ones belonging to the backward and marginalized categories. In India, 52% belong to the OBC category who have for years suffered educational and social discrimination based on caste.

Hence, it is the reservation policy that assures them a secure place in educational and other fields of life.

Merit Is Essential

As we are entering the 75th year of independence, we still see the domination of the upper caste in schools, colleges, and jobs. Some people hire only those belonging to the upper caste, which depicts how badly we require reservations.

Without it, even meritorious students belonging to SC/ST/OBC backgrounds won’t be able to secure a seat in schools, colleges, or jobs.

Though the continuation of the reservation policy will ignite anger and we’ll hear words such as, ‘this is why this country will always be backward and never be like America’.

However, reservation promises backward people the right to equality, right to freedom of expression, and cultural and educational rights, and thus, we must provide them with their rights through the policy of reservations.

BLOGGER SOUNDARYA’S OPINION-

“Reservation Promotes Inequality And Benefits The ‘undeserving’ “

Reservation And Inequality

With our country’s six fundamental rights in place, reservation has been claimed as the seventh essential right for every citizen. It has also been asserted that reservation will guarantee equality by providing equal rights to the underprivileged sectors of society.

But, can India attain equality if these individuals are raised in every sector without taking into consideration the general category of students?

First things first, the reservation does not benefit all the people subjected under the category of weaker sections. Out of over 22 crores of SCs, STs, and OBCs, there are only a few lakhs of seats available for students in jobs, educational institutions, etc breaking behind the aspirations of many people who rely upon reservation.

Merit And Efficiency In Danger

An impression IS created amongst the minds of SC, ST, and OBC students that they need not be required to work hard in order to clear an examination.

They must abandon the crutches of reservation and declare that they would work hard and compete on merit with higher castes to demonstrate that they are not intellectually inferior to upper castes.

Secondly, regarding SCs and STs, however, many upper caste people discriminate and look down on them, I don’t agree with the fact that providing seats to them will end the whole game of discrimination in society.

Rather, it will even increase the chances of hatred and biases if he/she secures in a highly prestigious institution with lesser marks.

However, additional facilities and assistance should be provided to underprivileged children of all castes (including upper castes) and faiths to maintain a fair playing field.

For example, a poor parent’s child may not be able to afford school textbooks. As a result, the state should give him free textbooks. This, however, is not the same as giving caste-based reservations, which I vehemently oppose.
