Protests in Iran have been going on for weeks now, with no dispersing of them in sight. People have been on a rampant protest against the mandatory hijab rule in the country after a woman called Mahsa Amini died in custody of the Iran morality police where she was being kept because she was accused of violating the hijab rules of Iran.
Men, women, youngsters and many more not just in Iran but world over have been raising up arms against this archaic rule. However, in the midst of all this, clips have been going viral stating how Iran is planning to mass execute 15,000 protesters who were detained in the anti-hijab protests.
Famous people like Peter Frampton, Viola Davis, Sophie Turner, anadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and many others were among the ones who shared these posts and videos on their Twitter and oher social media.
However, is this news really true?
Fake News
Simply put, no, this news is not true and there has been no verdict to mass execute 15,000 protesters that are currently detained.
As of now, coming from fact checkers, only 1 person that was related to the protests has been sentenced to death by Iranian authorities. The fake news seems to be generating from how the Iranina lawmakers and parliament sent a letter to the Iranian government asking for “severe punishment” for those caught in detention while protesting.

A line from the letter, from state media reports, read “We, the representatives of this nation, ask all state officials, including the Judiciary, to treat those, who waged war [against the Islamic establishment] and attacked people’s life and property like the Daesh [terrorists], in a way that would serve as a good lesson in the shortest possible time.”
According to a site called VerifyThis, a Newsweek article with the headline, that has since been changed “Iran Protesters Refuse to Back Down as 15,000 Face Execution” could have sparked the misinformation.
The 15,000 number on the other hand, could come from reports and sources like United Nations and the Human Rights Activists News Agency that are claiming how many people have been detained during the protests in the country.
Newsweek in their article had written in the article that “the country’s parliament overwhelmingly voted in favor of the death penalty for protesters” but on November 15th 2022, they took back this article and corrected it.
However, while this news is fake and has been debunked, there is still much concern out there regarding the detained protesters and their fate.
