When it comes to ‘friendship’ it’s a theme that has transcended generations and perhaps it always will. For instance, the cult sitcom Friends, a show starring gen X that millennials grew up on, is hungrily binged by gen Z and is getting a reboot called ‘Friend Reunion’ this May.
One other such show is, The Baby-Sitters Club that Ann M Martin wrote between 1986 and 2000, which displays all the feel-goodness of the girl gang’s intimate bonds.
So while we’ll always need our friends to make it through life, no matter when we’re born. However, the concept, per se, has evolved with time. And with it, its fundamentals, expectations, and objectives as well.
Psychotherapist Rhea Gandhi, who worked on a global Friendship study that interviewed 30,000 people across 16 countries including India conducted by Snap Inc, explains, “Creating strong and secure bonds with friends allows for fun, playfulness, and lasting memories for both Gen Z and millennials. Honesty, open-mindedness, loyalty, and support are qualities that are most valued.”
She further adds, “I’ve found that millennials especially value open-minded and non-judgemental friendships. Because when they need freedom or want to explore their religious views, gender, identity, and so on, they go to their friends. Gen Z tends to have more open-minded families, and aren’t completely reliant on their friends for this,”.

So, to grasp a better understanding of the evolving theme of friendship, ED Times did a little digging into millennials (born between 1981 and 1995) versus gen Z (born between 1996 and 2010) about their understanding of friendship and how they perceive it, to weigh in.
