Double-Standard Human Attributes Regarding Suicide And Suicidal Patients

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his Bandra apartment on 14th June 2020. Since then the country has been giving all its attention to mental health issues.

According to reports, Sushant was suffering from clinical depression and was under treatment for the past six months. Reports even said that Sushant started to hear voices which scared his girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty, and that was the time she left Sushant’s place.

Rhea Chakraborty, Sushant’s alleged girlfriend, is now facing tremendous backlashes from the public. This is not all, even director Mahesh Bhatt is being accused of asking Rhea to leave Sushant because of the condition of his mental health.

Well, to be honest, I find the way people are voicing their opinion about mental health and accusing others of Sushant Singh Rajput’s demise extremely disgusting.

Mental health is a less-discussed topic in India and is considered taboo. People who do not even believe that there are conditions like depression, suicidal tendencies or panic attacks are now accusing Bollywood of leaving him alone during his struggle.

As a patient of depression for the last couple of years, I have noticed a few facts about people and their treatment of patients who have mental health issues. I would like to share them with you.

  • Depression, anxiety, panic attacks and suicidal tendencies are some mental conditions.

Though these issues are not visible, they do exist. People in India often consider them as madness and choose to avoid people who have mental health issues.

So the behaviour of Rhea Chakraborty is nothing new. I experienced people walking out of my life because I used to get panic attacks.

  • People who are vocal about mental health issues are often called attention seekers, who just to draw attention talking about a disease that is not visible from outside.
  • Battling depression is not easy and one needs to check with a doctor if they feel uncomfortable with their state.

But I often receive advice about doing yoga or consuming alcohol to get rid of depression. Apparently our society prefers alcohol to a prescription from a psychiatrist and can literally do anything to avoid getting checked by a doctor for mental health issues.

  • People in our country feel that mental health issues are the illness of wealthy people.

People who are economically challenged are too busy earning their bread and butter. Therefore these issues do not touch them.

Well, I am not very wealthy! But I am a patient of anxiety. I have seen people having mental health issues despite being not so wealthy.

Sometimes they can’t get themselves treated because of their financial constraints but that does not mean they cannot face such challenges.

  • Irrespective of any relationship, our society is extremely critical towards people who are not having a healthy mental state.

This society is scared of people who are suicidal and even if they try to reach out and talk, they are often ignored or treated with extreme coldness.

  • Most importantly, it is not easy to have patience and deal with people who have mental health issues.

It is not always easy to listen to them or console them and provide them with warmth and that is okay. But giving fake hope on social media which says “Reach out to me whenever you feel like talking! I am there for you!” is also not appreciated.

Our country needs a serious awareness programme for mental health issues and it is important to educate people about the same.

I really hope Sushant Singh Rajput’s unfortunate demise will be a wake-up call for the people of our country and will enhance their mental health awareness, and convince people that mental health issues are real and sometimes even kill!
