Coca-Cola Launches Sea Green Bottles Made From Marine Plastic To Fight Oceanic Pollution

Coca-Cola, the world’s leading soft drink manufacturers have taken an amazing step towards the betterment of the environment. The industry giant has come out with a special sea green bottle that is made from marine plastic.

At a time when multinational companies are allegedly setting fire to the environment, this news arrives as a gust of fresh air.

What Is Marine Plastic?

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), over 300 million tons of plastics are produced each year. Out of the 300 million ton, at least 8 million tons of that plastic end up in the ocean.

These products make up almost 80% of all the marine debris, from the surface to deep sea. The plastics often wash up on the shore.

The sea animals (from fish to whales) consume the debris, often leading to their death and extinction.

Coca-Cola’s Contributions

According to a survey conducted by the ‘Break Free From Plastic‘ global movement, Coca-Cola was found for the second year in a row to be the most polluting brand in a global audit of plastic trash. They were responsible for more garbage than the other top three polluters combined.

The plastics represented 50 different types and could be traced back to almost 8,000 brands. Coca-Cola was responsible for 11,732 pieces of plastic litter found in 37 countries on four different continents.

Coca-Cola was also the top source of plastic in Africa and Europe and the second-largest source in Asia and South America.

Plans For The Environment

Coca-Cola Western Europe’s president Tim Brett said, “Too many of the world’s finite resources are currently discarded as waste. We know we need to do more to correct this. The targets we have set out today are ambitious and rightly so. There is a valuable role for packaging, but it must always be collected, recycled and reused.”

The process being used to ‘purify’ the debris is called ‘depolymerization’. This advanced technology removes impurities from lower-grade plastic to make it reusable for food and drink packaging.

With the plans to draw the technology, Coca-Cola has revealed the first-ever sample bottle made using recovered and recycled marine plastics. This bottle has a sea green label with the declaration.

Almost 300 bottles have been made from the recycled plastics to be used as prototypes.

The mess which was once lying useless in beaches around the world, are now being useful and friendly to our environment.

Tim Brett also said, “Our aim, working in partnership, is to see the term “single-use plastic” become redundant, both in our business and beyond, as all of our plastic – and indeed all of our packaging – is delivered within a closed loop.

After the press release and unveiling of the bottles, it is reported that these bottles will be available in the market from 2020.
