Breakfast Babble: Why Everyone Is Suddenly Trying To Become The Best Version Of Themselves

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

When did having a normal life become so embarrassing?

Now, apparently, we all need to become the best version of ourselves.

And honestly, the pressure is everywhere. Open Instagram and someone is waking up at 5 a.m. for a sunrise run. Someone else is journaling their feelings in a beige notebook.

Another person is drinking green juice that looks like lawn water. Then there’s that one guy who has already finished 47 books this year and somehow has time to meditate for 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, I woke up at 10:30 a.m. and spent the first 40 minutes staring at my phone.

But apparently, I need to “lock in”.

The internet has convinced us that every ordinary habit is actually a self-improvement opportunity. Drinking water? Hydration journey. Going for a walk? Healing era. Reading one book? Intellectual comeback. Cleaning your room? Resetting your life.

Even having a bad day now feels unproductive.

You can’t just be sad. You have to “process your emotions”. You can’t just be tired. You need to ask yourself whether you are experiencing burnout.

You can’t just eat a burger. Somewhere, a wellness influencer is telling you that your gut health is about to file a complaint.

And then comes the shopping. Because apparently, becoming your best self requires approximately 17 products.

A journal. A planner. A water bottle. Resistance bands. Skincare. Supplements. A yoga mat. A Kindle. Maybe a diffuser for the bedroom because, obviously, the reason you haven’t achieved your dreams is poor ambience.

The funniest part is that self-improvement itself has become another form of comparison.

Someone posts their 6 am morning routine, and suddenly your 9 am life feels like a personal failure.

But maybe we don’t need to optimise every second of our existence.

Maybe watching three episodes of a show, ordering fries, sleeping until noon on a Sunday, or doing absolutely nothing for an afternoon isn’t “wasting time”.

Maybe it’s just… living.

Because the best version of ourselves probably isn’t the person with the perfect morning routine, six-pack abs and a colour-coded planner.

Maybe it’s just us, slightly less stressed, reasonably hydrated, and finally remembering where we left our phone.
