Breakfast Babble: When I Understood That Manifestation Is Not Everything

-

Breakfast Babble is ED’s own little space on the interwebs where we gather to discuss ideas and get pumped up (or not) for the day. We judge things, too. Sometimes. Always. Whatever, call it catharsis and join in, people.

I used to treat manifestation like a part-time job. Vision board on Sunday, gratitude journal on Monday, 3-6-9 method on Tuesday, and then I’d sit back and wait for the universe to courier my life to my doorstep.

I genuinely believed that if I visualised hard enough, the promotion, the guy, the money and the “main character energy” would eventually show up because I’d asked enough times nicely.

Spoiler: it didn’t work like that.

Not because manifestation is fake, but because I was using it as a replacement for effort instead of a companion to it.

The wake-up call was embarrassingly mundane. I’d been manifesting a job opportunity for weeks. I cut out pictures, wrote affirmations, imagined myself getting the call. I did the whole thing. But I hadn’t actually updated my resume or applied anywhere.

I was so busy “aligning my energy” that I forgot alignment doesn’t apply to you on LinkedIn.

And honestly, that wasn’t just about the job. I realised I had started doing this with everything. I’d visualise the outcome, feel like I was already living it, and then wonder why nothing was moving. At some point, I had confused thinking about doing something with actually doing it.

That’s when it hit me. Manifestation without action is just elaborate daydreaming with better lighting.

The universe isn’t a vending machine where you insert vibes and collect outcomes. Maybe manifestation helps you focus, stay hopeful or recognise opportunities. But it can’t send the email, make the phone call or fill out the form for you.

Once I recalibrated, manifestation became less about waiting and more about choosing a direction and actually walking towards it. I still write my intentions down. I still have my little rituals.

But now they’re followed by the boring stuff nobody puts on a vision board, like applications, follow-ups, learning, rejection and trying again.

Honestly, it’s a relief to let go of the idea that everything is supposed to fall into my lap if I “just believe.”

Because somewhere along the way, I had started calling passivity “spirituality”.

Now manifestation feels less like magic and more like setting an intention, doing the work and accepting that some things will still take time.

The universe might be listening.

But it’s also, very clearly, still expecting me to do my part.
