You know, the weirdest thing about Indians is that our uneducated derrieres try to stigmatize and stereotype everything regardless of how harmless it is.
I am not exactly a big fan of Quest Mall. There is no space to breathe. It is congested with overpriced shops – some quite irrelevant if I may. I visited Quest with my friends today and we were playing a friendly match of Uno when a guard informed us.
For those of you who don’t know, UNO is a very harmless card game and can be played with families and friends. However, the manager along with a security guard approached us and stated,
“This is a place where people from respectable backgrounds get together with their family and friends. This isn’t the type of place where you play cards.”
We apologized and stopped immediately. However, at the very next table was a man with a packet of cigarettes sitting right on the table in broad daylight. Apparently, that was okay.

The Origin Of Such Mentality
Pertaining to the olden days, people would gamble with a deck of cards. To be more precise, the ones that involved Spades, Hearts, Clubs, and Diamonds. Even today, people gamble with those cards. But that doesn’t mean each and every card game is played for the sole purpose of gambling.
The UNO card game was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati. To this day, the game has never been played with the use of money and to this date, there have never been instances of betting with the same.
Thereby, it is genuinely very frustrating when people stereotype it.
In fact, even when I was back in college apparently playing UNO made us “gamblers.” You can’t possibly carry Ludo or Chess or even Monopoly with you when you’re going to college and there are only so many things to talk about with the people you meet on an everyday basis during breaks.
To conclude, to anyone who’s reading this, UNO is NOT a game for gamblers. It’s a simple fun card game that can be played with family and friends.
