In the viral post, Mr. Ranjith shared his hardships and struggles, from being a night watchman at a BSNL telephone exchange at Panathur in Kasaragod to getting selected in India’s premier business school as an assistant professor.

The Hardships

In the viral post, Mr. Ranjith described the struggles he faced while managing his studies and a job together as he hailed from a low-income background. His father is a tailor, and his mother, a daily wage worker under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

I attended college during the daytime and worked at the telephone exchange at night,” he mentioned in his post.

He added, “Due to some luck, I got the job as a night security officer at the Telephone exchange in Panathur. During the day times, I would study. The doors opened in front of me for the academic career that I thought I had lost once.”

He further added in the post, “For five years, during my degree and postgraduate days, I lived at the telephone exchange. As a security guard, my main concern was to ensure uninterrupted power supply.”

Mr. Ranjith, who did his post-graduation from Central University, Kasaragod, further mentioned his life working at the telephone exchange, “from college, I went home only to eat, and was soon back at the exchange on guard duty. I had converted the exchange into my study room as well as living room.”

The Undefeated Spirit

After university came IIT-Madras, but there too things weren’t easy as he added, “I had no social capital to fall back on in my life at the village, where no one is bothered about higher studies. When I landed at IIT, I could not even speak English…. I had never moved out of Kasaragod. In fact, at one time, I wanted to quit the Ph.D. programme.’’

It was his professors at IIT-Madras, Dr. Subash Sasidhaaran, who came to his help. He said, “Prof Subash, who was my guide, encouraged and convinced me that my decision to quit the course would be wrong. I decided to fight against the odds and nurtured a dream to become a faculty at IIM.”
