Apple Trumps Samsung In Phone Sales For The First Time Since 2016

Apple emerges as the top global smartphone vendor!

It is no surprise to any mobile phone user that the iOS vs Android debate is a never-ending one. But in terms of smartphone sales, Apple seems to have beaten its nemesis Samsung during the last quarter of 2020.

The information is based on Gartner’s latest report, and data suggests that this is the first time that Apple has been able to overcome the sales of Samsung phones since the last quarter of 2016. This data gives the big tech giant the title of being the current top smartphone vendor globally.

Facts Of The Report

During the last quarter of 2020, the company shipped nearly 80 million units, which was significantly more than the sales of any other smartphone company. The question now arises as to why this significant shift has taken place.

iPhone 12

The report suggests that the latest iPhone 12 and the iPhone 11 have played a role in increasing its sales. Regarding iPhone 12, the new 5G features and capabilities of the phone and its improved exterior design have contributed to Apple’s double-digit growth.

Even as consumers remain cautious in their spending and held off on some discretionary purchases, 5G smartphones and pro-camera features encouraged some end users to purchase new smartphones or upgrade their current smartphones in the quarter,” said Anshul Gupta, the senior research director at Gartner.

Apple’s business is seasonal in nature, and the quarter ending in December is usually when the company records most of its sales. Therefore, while Apple may not have as vast a collection of smartphones in the market as Samsung does, it has been able to capture the market last quarter.

This achievement allowed Apple to push past the then-existing market leader, Samsung, and get to the top of the pack. Some interesting facts of the matter include that Apple remained unaffected by the global pandemic than other smartphone companies.

Samsung Galaxy S10

The shipments of smartphones globally dropped by 5.4 per cent last year, but on the other hand, Apple sales grew by 3.3 per cent. Samsung sales suffered a loss of nearly 14.6 per cent last year and only sold around 62 million units in the previous quarter.

Data On Other Smartphone Companies

Xiaomi Smartphones

Besides Apple, Xiaomi was also able to record substantial growth in the last quarter. The sales recorded showed an increase of 15.7 per cent compared to its performance last year. It even sold nearly 43 million units in the previous year.

The data suggests that Samsung faced stiff competition from various other smartphone companies like Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. Based on this data, Anshul Gupta commented on the growing preference for lower-to-mid-tier smartphones around the world.

From the annual perspective, Samsung still emerges as the market leader if the full year’s sales are considered. Therefore, the question of whether Apple’s victory was merely for just the last quarter or whether the company aims to sustain those figures for this year as well are yet to be determined.
