Amazon Is Selling Bracelets That Shock You If You Eat Too Much Fast Food

Tomorrow is cheat day?

I was standing on the balcony, waiting for him, with a mix of foolish excitement and wild apprehension. The wait was killing me!

He finally arrived. I saw him. He saw me. I almost cried out of joy.

And just then, I saw the most beautiful thing in the world: the stunning square box and a can of coke, emerging out of his delivery bag. I couldn’t take it anymore. I rushed downstairs.

Ah, good days! This is my story. My name is Ms. Spends All Her Money On Food.

Once upon a time, my life motto used to be: ‘So what if I am addicted to junk food? It could’ve been worse! It could’ve been drugs!’ and with that thought, I used to quickly grab that last slice of mouth-melting, delicious, cheesy pizza, before anyone else could.

Until one day, when I was aimlessly browsing through the internet, I saw an ad for ‘Pavlok Shock Clock Wake Up Trainer’. It looked like a cool bracelet, but the more I learned about it, the crazier it got!

This bracelet is designed to give you electric shocks if you eat too much fast-food. It can also cure you of your other bad habits like smoking, drinking, sleeping late, and pulling your hair.

How Does It Work?

The bracelet will be connected to an app on your phone so that it can figure out what habit you are trying to quit and custom-make shocks for you. Even your friends and family can access that app and if they see you eating too much junk, they can shock you remotely.

Just imagine, you are sitting with your friends, covertly yet hurriedly going for that last piece of fry, when one of your friends notices and just annihilates you with one click!

“If you need extreme discipline, the app can track your hand movements and automatically shock you every time you raise your fork to your mouth.”

“The device is capable of delivering 150 shocks a day, which they compared to walking across a rug and touching a doorknob, and you can control it remotely to shock yourself if you’re even tempted by a cheeseburger.”

This device, built by a company called Pavlok, has been sold more than 50,000 times according to Amazon.

According to the product description, “Pavlok is a behaviour training device that works by utilizing aversive conditioning. Aversive conditioning is essentially behaviour training that uses negative stimuli and association to help reaffirm a specific action as undesirable.”

How Are The Reviews?

Pavlok has a 5/5 rating on Amazon and most people seem pretty happy with the product.

However, some people were just not happy with it and said that the product doesn’t work.

The Realisation

Now, don’t get any ideas. I wasn’t going to spend Rs 25,000 on a bracelet that shocks me and even if I had bought it, then one of the two things would happen:

  1. I would become shock resistant.
  2. I would have never actually used it.

But, the whole thing got me thinking. We have officially reached a time when we would voluntarily prefer to get electric shocks to quit a bad habit. Isn’t this sad? We should really sit down and introspect about this. We need to learn how to control ourselves especially when we know that our actions are harmful to us in the long run.

Moreover, I don’t need that shock bracelet because I already have my own version of the bracelet. Her name is my Mom. Thanks mom, for always keeping me in check.

I bet you’ve got your own version of the bracelet too. Meanwhile, stay fit.

I’ll cut down on fast-food too starting tomorrow. Oh, wait! Tomorrow is cheat day! I’ll start next week then.
