With the rebranding of Facebook into Meta, the metaverse has gained quite the attention from tech giants like Microsoft, Roblox Metaverse and Nvidia Omniverse with a market opportunity that might reach up to $800 billion by the year 2024.
According to most people, metaverse just might be the new evolution of the internet – Web 3 or Web 3.0. This is owing to the fact that the metaverse is a virtual reality that is perceived on a person-to-person basis. It means different things to different people so much so that the thin veil between the virtual world and reality has become blurred beyond recognition.
Mark Zuckerberg had stated,
“The metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet.”
Although he proved himself right, but at what cost?
Cons Of The Metaverse
Regardless of it being an immersive experience, one cannot simply monitor a vast universe such as the metaverse thereby leaving loopholes for impending disasters.
For example, only recently Roblox, which is an online gaming platform in the metaverse was accused of hosting Nazi sex parties in it. Mind you, the platform was created to cater to children but it was later expanded for adults. However, about 69% of the active users of Roblox are under the age of 16 with only 14% being over the age of 25, as of 2020.
What is of utmost importance and worrisome is that these games consist of an instant messenger where users can interact with each other as well as with the ones who are playing the game. Thereby, a 25-year-old person just might end up soliciting a 16-year-old without really realizing that the person behind the screen is a minor.
This could form a deep impact on the child, thereby scarring him or worse forming an impression on him.
Apart from that, 2 days ago, a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and harassed virtually in the metaverse. Cybercrime has always been rampant ever since the existence of technology but recently it has been gaining momentum which can prove to be fatal if not handled immediately.

Alternatives Of Metaverse
Bloktopia
Backed and built by Polygon, Bloktopia is a decentralized metaverse platform. It owes its popularity to Polygon which is one of the leading blockchains in the world.
Enjin
It is a metaverse platform that allows people to create, store, list, and trade NFTs all in one place and that too with a decent amount of fees inclining towards the lower point.
SushiSwap
Allowing its users to buy and sell digital currencies, SushiSwap is a decentralized exchange platform that does not require a centralized third party. Its market capitalization in 2022 surpassed 500 million US dollars.
Decentraland
It is an Ethereum-based virtual reality platform that allows its users to buy, build upon, and monetize plots of virtual land. What’s even better is that it uses only two tokens – MANA and LAND wherein the former is used to buy avatars, accessories, etc on the marketplace in Decentraland and the latter is used to track ownership of virtual land on the platform.

Ethereum is a popular cryptocurrency and the Ethereum network is the most active blockchain on the global scale. Another feature that adds to its charm is that Ethereum can be used to purchase real estate in the metaverse.
Wilder World
Wilder World finds its roots in several games and NFT-based projects. It is a 5-D metaverse platform that allows its users to buy condos in a virtual based in Miami called Wiami as well as purchase NFT cars.
Render
Render finds its popularity in making use of people’s idle graphics processing units – GPUs to create visuals. It is a decentralized network that can also provide companies with highly developed and revolutionary graphics in an affordable and scalable way.
Genesis Worlds
It is a decentralized open world that preaches about working as a community for a sustainable virtual world. It has developed an ecosystem consisting of numerous virtual offshoot worlds created by members of the community who share common grounds.
Even though these are some alternatives to the metaverse, at the end of the day what really matters is our reality which lies in the physical world and not in the virtual realm.
