Wimbledon 2015: The Week Gone By And The Week To Come

-

Ladies and gentlemen seated in smart formal dresses and suits; others in crisp white attire on the lush green grass; under the London summer sun.

Sounds like a high tea? Well, anyone could be fooled.

On this occasion however, I’m referring to the Wimbledon of course!

The third Grand Slam of the year, the Wimbledon, is currently underway and we are at about the halfway stage.

Here is a look at the week gone by and the week to come:

Gentlemen’s Singles

  • Sitting pretty as the top seed, defending champion Novak Djokovic’s journey has been smooth sailing so far.
  • Stanislas Wawrinka will probably face Djokovic in the semi-finals.
  • In the other half, Roger Federer and Andy Murray will in all likelihood cross paths.
  • Rafael Nadal started the championship with a shocking 10th seed but ended up shocking us more when he was shown his way out by Dustin Brown as early as in the 2nd round.

Ladies’ Singles

  • Defending champion Petra Kvitova, who was also the 2nd seed, took fans all over the world by surprise when she crashed out in the 3rd round at the hands of Jelena Jankovic.
  • Another surprising event was 3rd seed Simona Halep’s exit in the first round when she lost to Jana Cepelova.
  • Yet another surprise was the Serena Williams scare; her match with Heather Watson could really have gone either way.
  • If all goes according to plan, Williams will face Maria Sharapova in the semi-final.

Gentlemen’s Doubles

  • On the Indian front: Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea (9th seed), Leander Paes and Daniel Nestor (11th seed) are in the third round.
  • Unfortunately however, the other half-Indian pair of Purav Raja and Fabrice Martin could not make it past the first round.
  • Bob and Mike Bryan other top seeds are also still in the competition.

Ladies’ Doubles

  • Delightful for fans of Indian Tennis: the pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis is the top seed and has reached the third round in straight sets.
  • All the other top seeds are also still in the running, and so no major upsets in this category yet, phew!

Mixed Doubles

  • The Indian scene consists of both good and bad news.
  • As protocol demands, bad news first: Alla Kudryavtseva and Mahesh Bhupati crashed out in the first round and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Rohan Bopanna in the second.
  • Good news: both the pairs of Martina Hingis and Leander Paes as well as that of Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares have made it to the third round.

If anything is certain in the singles categories, it is that no one really rules the “Tennis World” at this time, and anything can (and will) happen.

The doubles categories look comparatively more settled on the consistency front.

17:00 hours Indian Standard Time is an ideal time for a tea party; so get dressed or suit up, cause a tie never hurt nobody; pour yourself some hot tea in the fancy cups you’ve been saving for an occasion and glue your eyes to the court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, that demands and deserves your attention.

15-30-40-Game-Set-Match-Championship; we are nearly there!
