Bhang, the divine intoxicant consumed during the colourful festival of Holi is obtained from the leaves of the Cannabis plant. It is known to escalate the spirits of a person and give him immense pleasure.

Which is why people have bhang on holi. It is the official drink of holi which is mostly consumed in North india! The sweet and spicy thandai along with a handful of laddoos and pakodas is what comprises the  delicacies of holi.

Bhang from Banaras

As we all know that Banaras is a city of Lord Shiva, it is known as the hub of bhang and cannabis. The bhang makers line up on the Ghats of Banaras where they grind the Cannabis leaves and make the green paste. It is then mixed with milk, ghee and spices to prepare bhang.

It is also stated in the Atharva Veda that bhang is a very beneficial drink which when taken in proper amounts acts as a medicine. It helps in reducing fever and also digestion related problems. The herb used in this drink is known to be among the 5 most sacred plants.

Not only this but many sadhus also ingest bhang to power up their meditation and to reach a very elevated state of spirituality. Even the Sufis use this as an aid to gain ecstasy!

Here’s the history and myths related to Bhang:

Thus, ending on a ‘high’ note, wish you a happy and safe Holi. *pun intended*
