RedditED: Waking Up At 3 am, Is It Really The Devil’s Hour?

-

RedditED, an ED original feature, where we pick up a very cool discussion thread, full of quirky informative responses and spin a story around it! Today we are kicking it off with a story about the Devil’s Hour, the widely believed ‘cursed’ 3 am-4 am.

Have you ever woken up at 3 am in the night with the feeling that there is someone else in the room looking at you?

It’s all over the Internet. Reports of knocking, whispering, footsteps, being touched, temperature dropping, shadow spotting, all kinds of ghastly supernatural things happening to people waking up between 3 am- 4 am.

There are literally millions of cases of people noticing some kind of unusual activity or experiencing some kind of night terrors after waking up at 3 am. It is believed to be the Devil’s Hour, the time of the night when the veil between the living and the dead become the thinnest, therefore the dead or evil spirits try to make contact with humans.

It is also known as the Witching hour because a lot of spells are cast around this hour in occult cultures and believed to be a period when the supernatural forces are at their strongest. Bizarre!

I have not. And whenever I have, I never noticed anything unusual. Gone back to bed just as peacefully. Like me, millions and millions and millions of people go to bed every day and sleep through the night peacefully. And if they have to make pee-pee, they get their business done without spotting any scary thing in the mirror.

3 am

Fact or Fiction, what is it? Let’s get to the bottom of it.

Enter, Reddit.

Someone asked everyone (framing in my own words), “Hey, why is the devil’s hour designated at 3 am-4 am universal. Do devils, witches and ghosts account for time zone differences and daylight saving hours before crawling out to spook?”

Pretty funny, but valid questioning.

Someone from Japan answered that Japanese believed it to be 2 am. Yet others claimed how the original witching hours is around midnight and not at 3 am. Some believers strongly put forward that in Roman Catholic 3 am is believed to be the time of the devil because the Christ died at 3 pm, so the devils choose the opposite hour to torment people. To this, a Roman Catholic countered, “I am an Italian living in Rome and I have never heard anything like this in my life.”

One even blamed Shakespeare. Ouch.

3 am

I mean yes, think about this, do spirits wait around looking at watches and clocks to strike three to cause disturbances? Mostly, no. Wherever on earth paranormal activity has been recorded, the people very specifically reported them spread out over the whole day.

The ‘devil’s hour’ notion is relatively modern, and like a demonology student reports is a fiction perpetrated by the movies like The Conjuring where everything seemingly goes berserk after 3 am.

Now, there are several scientific explanations for the experiences at 3 am.

Firstly, our internal clocks are fantastic. If you keep telling yourself, that you have to wake up at so and so time, your body is most likely to adhere to that.

Second, circadian rhythms, your sleeping cycle. Our bodies are naturally programmed to wake up at dawn break and feel tired when it darkens. So if you sleep early, like at 10, and dawn starts breaking after 4 am, our bodies after preparing to wake up by 3 am.

Thirdly, it’s when your body temperature and metabolism are at their lowest. Your body either wants to relieve itself and you cannot blame it for wanting so.

Lastly, and most importantly, you might be experiencing sleep paralysis. So you probably are at the R.E.M (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of your sleep, when you are deeply sleeping, but your brain is partly awake. You will probably experience hallucinations of the most horrifying sorts and everything you are afraid of will manifest in your mind. But you need to know that they are all under your control and you can fight against your fears. If you can focus you can calm down and they will subside.

Strong belief in an idea makes more likely to materialize. By giving negative entities their personal time-slot you might even be encouraging them to come to you, no kidding.

But it’s mostly a fear manifesting from an idea, like how a lot more hauntings were reported around the world after people watched The Exorcist in 1973.

Watch out. Your subconscious mind might be playing with you.
