As Indians, we take pride in the diversity our country possesses. But come to think of it, it is strangely surprising how we are still unaware of simple facts about the country we have been residing for so long.

A question on Quora has been making rounds for quite some time.  The question, “What are some facts about India that Indians are generally unaware of?” has received certain answers that are bound to surprise you.

Of all the answers the question got, the following answers were most astonishing.

1. The logo of the State Bank of India, blue circle with a small cut at the bottom was designed by a student of National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The design was inspired by the structure of Kankaria Lake, Ahmedabad in Gujrat.SBI_KankariaLake-1

2. India’s football club, Mohun Bagan A.C. is older than European giants like Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Juventus and Paris Saint Germain.

On September 25th 1977, Mohun Bagan A.C. played a friendly match against New York Cosmos, a team that comprised of legendary players such as Pelé, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto and Giorgio Chinaglia.

The match ended on a 2-2 draw with the Indian players receiving a lot of praise for their performance. Such was the quality of Mohun Bagan back in the day.

3. The world famous ‘JAMES BOND’ theme song is actually inspired from the song ‘Good sign Bad Sign’ from the Indian novel ‘A House for Mr. Biswas ‘. The song is originally accompanied by Indian instruments such as tabla.bond-teaser

4. During the Second World War, around 500 Poles took refuge in the coastal town of Nawanagar( literally meaning New Town) of Gujrat. The name was changed to Jamnagar, meaning ‘The City of Jams’ in remembrance of the Polish colony that was established there.oimg 3

5. Until 1896, India was the only source of diamonds in the world. It was later that diamond reserves were found in Africa and other parts of the world. Guess we now know the world’s obsession with Koh-i-noor.

6. CIA lost a Nuclear Device in the Himalayas

In the 1960’s CIA in collaboration with IIB installed a nuclear-powered listening device on the Nanda Devi peak. Due to the poor weather conditions, they lost the device. Search operations were conducted for almost a year without any success.

Well, there is no doubt we love our country but it’s about time we started knowing the country much more intimately. Even mundane objects have something fascinating to tell us. You’ll probably go bonkers trying to know the whole of India!
