Lakme Fashion Week Supports Plus-Size Models: Moving In The Right Direction

-

Fashion is always quite synonymous with tall, slim women. I remember being stick thin as a child and being told by all my relatives that I would make a great model. What else does modelling require from one, except unbelievably perfect bodies, to attain which women starve themselves, develop eating disorders and what not?

The world has come to terms with the fact that skinny looking models on every magazine cover, and on the ramp only promotes body shaming, as a result of which the impressionable minds of young girls is engrained with the idea of losing weight to match the models.

India has finally entered the league of body positive fashion brands that include plus models at the Lakme Fashion Week (LFW) is on its way to hunt plus-size models (both male and female) for its winter-festive edition.

Shilpa Chavan of Little Shilpa in association with the plus-size store aLL is organising the event. aLL has collaborated with LFW to break thought patterns and bring out a collection that will be showcased in the forthcoming show.

“The auditions will be held at St. Regis on July 29 for plus-size men and women who want to model for Lakme Fashion Week. This hunt is a precursor to the first plus-size show to be held during the upcoming LFW at St. Regis here from August 24-28”, a statement said.

The auditions will be held on 29th July 2016, at 12:00PM, at Alhambra, 8th Floor, The St. Regis, Mumbai.

Jaspreet Chandok, Vice President and Head-Fashion, IMG Reliance Pvt Ltd. Said, “We are looking forward to this show that will introduce new trends on the runway and also nurture plus-sized models interested in a career in modelling. We believe that fashion should embrace diversity and cater to all body types. The show is meant to highlight that one can be plus-sized and yet be fashionable, stylish and fabulous. At the auditions, we are looking for confident plus-sized males and females who are comfortable in their own skin”.

“Fashion and beauty in India must reflect our diversity. At Lakme Fashion Week, we are very excited to present our first plus sized fashion show in association with Little Shilpa. Redefining the future of fashion yet again, Lakme Fashion Week always strives for a more inclusive future for us all,” Purnima Lamba, Head of Innovation, Lakme added.

Plus-size or full-size has always existed in India as it is home to a lot of women who do not have a sixteen-inch waistline. Keeping that in mind, why is plus-size such a foreign concept in India?

The world recognises Ashley Graham as the woman who smashed norms by working as a lingerie model for plus-size clothing store Lane Bryant. Emme Aronson aka Melissa Owens Miller became a plus-size model after she recovered from anorexia and regained her health. But this list does not boast of any Indian model.

Well, as long as we are on the right path, we have nothing to complain about. Do we? Better late than never! Maybe now we will have a list of plus size models who will make us proud.

Plus-size models are finally receiving the recognition they deserve, and we only hope that the body positive movement is adopted by every brand and store.
