Back In Time: Harry Potter & The Order Of The Phoenix Hits Theatres

-

Back in Time is ED’s newspaper type column that reports an incident from the past as though it has happened just yesterday. It allows the reader to re-live it several years later, on the date it had occurred.

For this incident, we go back in time to 2007.

Los Angeles, 11 July 2007: Harry Potter & Order of the Phoenix, the fifth instalment in the Harry Potter movie franchise was finally released in theatres today. The movie is based on the fifth book by author J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novel series of the same name.

Directed by the very exquisite David Yates, the movie follows Harry’s return to Hogwarts after overcoming the traumatic loss of friend Cedric Diggory at the hands of vicious Lord Voldemort.

THE BACKDROP:

The movie picks up its pace from Harry being expelled from Hogwarts for using witchcraft in front of a Muggle. Baffled by the news, Harry is unable to make sense of the situation he got entrapped in. Soon enough he finds himself on a trial confronting the Minister of Magic to scarp his expulsion from Hogwarts.

THE WOO’S

  • Harry Potter’s very first snog! That too under a mistletoe. Ugh! So cute.
  • Harry’s bond with Sirius Black was absolutely heartwarming.
  • The exciting moment when the Weasley twins literally gave no damn to Cruella di Vil ie., Umbrige’s rules and set off amazing fireworks at the school.
  • Luna’s awkwardness is going to make you love her. Actress Evanna Lynch was absolutely brilliant in her portrayal of Luna Lovegood.
  • The Battle of the Department of the Mysteries. Just one word, Exquisite!

THE MEH’S

  • The flow of the movie was disruptive. The story line just didn’t seem to play continuously. For instance, we didn’t quite get to know how Cho and Harry started to date and what the hell happened to them later on after that kiss.
  • From a Quidditch World Cup in the last movie to, “What? Quidditch?”. No reference to the sport anywhere.
  • Additional scenes such as detention with the blood ink quill may have classified for the director as vital for the movie but sure as hell not for me. Could’ve easily put a little Peeves or St. Mungo’s visit over there. Took away all the joy of a Harry Potter movie.

THE OVERALL VERDICT

The movie served its purpose of heading Harry’s story fairly but generated a lot of plot holes due to the limited run-time. With J.K. Rowling waiving green flag to any alterations to the script, this was bound to happen. If I didn’t know any better, the movie also taught me a few life lessons.

Fudge controlling the Daily Prophet, is a true testament to what “presstitution” in today’s era is like. Not only that, but justice isn’t plain for all to see. And lastly, those who love us, never really leave us. *Sob* Sirius *Sob*.

POST SCRIPTUM

Harry Potter & Order of the Phoenix is described as the 32nd highest grossing film of all time. It is also based longest Harry Potter book till date. The movie received oodles of appraises from critics all over the world and was declared a box office success within two days of its release.

Stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were applauded for the magnificent enhancements of their characters and were nominated for several awards.

The actors then reprised their roles for the sixth time in the sequel Harry Potter & the Half-Blood Prince which was released two years after the movie. To even this date now, it remains my favourite Harry Potter movie because Sirius’s death was a major tearjerker for me. Ugh! I hated Bellatrix.
