In a recent release of the Forbes 2018 list of 75 of the World’s Most Powerful People who make the world turn, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made it to the 9th position.

China’s Xi Jinping is at the top of the list, and has pushed Vladimir Putin, the Russian President who held the top spot for four consecutive years, down to the second position. US President Donald Trump holds the third spot.

The Top 3

Modi is ahead of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (13), United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May (14) and Apple chief Tim Cook (24).

Forbes’ annual ranking of The World’s Most Powerful People identifies one person out of every 100 million. “There are nearly 7.5 billion humans on planet Earth, but these 75 men and women make the world turn. Forbes’ annual ranking of The World’s Most Powerful People identifies one person out of every 100 million whose actions mean the most,” Forbes said.

Before the Narendra Modi government, Sonia Gandhi and Dr. Manmohan Singh have made it several times to the Forbes World’s Most Powerful People. In 2013, Sonia Gandhi was the third most powerful woman. She has also been ranked the 9th most powerful person once in 2010.

Narendra Modi had previously held the 9th spot in the Forbes’ 74 Most Powerful People, in 2016 and 2015.

HOW DID PM NARENDRA MODI MAKE IT TO THE FORBES TOP 10 MOST POWERFUL?

Forbes says that Modi “remains hugely popular” in the second most populated country in the world. Amongst other reasons, Modi’s November 2016 demonetization policy against corruption and black money was cited by Forbes.

“Modi has raised his profile as a global leader in recent years during official visits with US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. He has also emerged as a key figure in the international effort to tackle climate change, as warming affects millions of his country’s rural citizens.”

No doubt, Modi has put in considerable amount of effort in international relations.

Prime Minister Modi has invested significant effort into building India’s engagement with the US, and he has already paid four visits to America since assuming office.

Modi and International Relations

In his recent visit to France, he urged the aerospace giant “Airbus” to explore manufacturing opportunities in India as well.

Even when in Germany, he made a concrete pitch for the Make in India initiative. He is determined to put across India as a more competitive, confident and strong nation.

WHO ELSE MADE IT TO THE LIST?

Among other Most Powerful People, Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, with a net worth of 41.2 billion dollars, is the only other Indian on the power list, ranking 32nd. Microsoft’s India-born CEO Satya Nadella is on the 40th spot.

About Mukesh Ambani, this is what Forbes said, “the billionaire industrialist’s Reliance sparked a price war in India’s hyper-competitive telecom market with the launch of 4G phone service Jio in 2016. Jio has signed on 160 million customers by offering free domestic voice calls, dirt-cheap data services and virtually free smartphones.”

Mohammed Bin Salman Al Saud, The Crown Prince of Arabia, has been ranked at the 8th position, and is among the 17 new people who are on the list this year.

Other known people we have on the list are the Supreme Leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, assuming the 36th spot, and South Korean Prime Minister Moon Jae-In who holds the 54th position.

While compiling the list, Forbes considers hundreds of candidates from different walks of life all around the globe, and measures their power using four parameters of whether the person has power over lots of people, financial resources controlled by each person, whether the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres and that the candidates actively uses their power.

IMPLICATIONS THAT SUCH A GOOD RANK HAS ON INDIA

Unquestionably, such a decent rank would put across the Prime Minister’s image as a capable, influential and dynamic leader who could scramble into the list in a single tenure. This would, in turn, lead to better international relations and prove advantageous to the nation on all fronts.
