The recent Simpsons’ prediction coming true made me wonder whether India has ever had any show that could be considered to creative and out of the box so as to do the same thing.

Even one prediction that came true from an Indian serial would have done, however, unfortunately, I was unable to actually find any Indian serial that came anywhere near being so wacky that it could give out such predictions.

And that brought me to the realization that we Indians really take everything too seriously, to the point where anything that seems fun or ‘not serious’ is not considered worth anything.

Sure we might have major accomplishments in education, maths, science and even the literary arts for that matter, but I believe somewhere along the way we have lost any amount of creativity that can be seen in the Western society.

Let me interrupt that I am not saying the Western society is better, however, you cannot deny that they do have more liberty in terms of creativity and how to bring out really unique and fresh ideas even in television and animation. Something that we are still struggling with and seem to limit to only the Bollywood industry.

Indians seriously need to chill and here are 4 examples of them blowing things out proportion that show how we always take things too close to heart:

1. Amir Khan comment

In 2015, in an interview, Amir Khan apparently made the mistake of saying: ““When I chat with Kiran at home, she says ‘Should we move out of India?’ That’s a disastrous and big statement for Kiran to make. She fears for her child. She fears about what the atmosphere around us will be. She feels scared to open the newspapers every day.”

Although sure it might not have been the best thing to say on a national platform about his own country, but the statement was gravely taken out of context and the response pretty much solidified exactly what Khan was trying to say.

The immediate and immense negative backlash by people to Khan and how dare he say something negative about his country just showed our own intolerance to anyone having views opposing to our own.

2. Padmavati Row

Perhaps the biggest one till yet and one still ongoing, the Padmavati row was simply started because of a film.

A mere film has brought such an intense reaction from a particular community in India and the extent they have gone to, threatening to behead the director, cut off the nose of the main leads and more is scary.

What exactly is the overreaction for? A film? A simple Bollywood movie has incited so much rage?

3. The Modi Meme By AIB

Not only films, but even merely making a funny meme of one of our politicians can result in FIRs, police complaints and serious threats being made to one’s safety.

The Modi meme by AIB truly showed that now one cannot even make a harmless joke about our politicians just because of loyalists and their sensitive feelings.

Even the AIB roast done a couple of years back got them a FIR along with the participants. I mean what was the FIR for? Who exactly was insulted? When the people who are being roasted and their friends and family themselves don’t have any problem then what is the big deal?

4. India and Snapchat

While the comment was a bit insensitive however a better move would have just been to ignore it instead of giving such a massive reaction to it.

In the end, the statement was even clarified and did not seem to be as insulting as it was made to be before.

5. Sonu Nigam’s Azaan Tweet:

In April this year, singer Sonu Nigam wrote a tweet that said, “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India.”

He was apparently referring to the loud Azaan calls made by mosques at certain times of the day to notify Muslims on when to start their timely prayers of the day.

We even did a piece about how Nigam wasn’t entirely wrong in saying what he said: Shut Your Mouth! Sonu Nigam Is 100% Correct

This tweet resulted in an immediate backlash from Twitter and other social media users who cried out how Nigam was insensitive and derogatory towards the Muslim religion.

The tweet in itself was not entirely wrong either as later on a few members of the community have themselves come forward saying that the loud Azaan calls can contribute to noise pollution.

These are just a few examples of when Indians have overreacted there are many more that have been left out like the Priyank Chopra and Modi one where apparently the entire nation went into a tizzy when Chopra met with PM Modi wearing a slightly short dress.

Mind you, the dress was nowhere indecent and its only mistake was that it was a little above the knees. However, people that are still stuck in regressive mindsets felt that Chopra being a ‘woman’ should have been dressed more appropriately.
