Tejasswi Prakash, the actor who plays the wife of a 9-year-old in the show Pehredaar Piya Ki, pulled off a Varun Dhawan (he compared his movie to Nolan’s inception) by drawing parallels of her show with the most popular HBO series Game of Thrones created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
Assuming that most of us are aware of where this comparison is coming from (RIP Tommen and Margaery), let me go ahead and lay down counter arguments on why they both can’t be compared in the present case.
THE BASIS OF THE STORY IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT
While the Pehredaar Piya Ki is based on a story of an 18 years old girl who has to protect a 9-year-old kid and they eventually fall in love, Game of Thrones revolves around a huge plot. It is based in medieval times consisting of politics, history, and dragons. The pedophile relationship was just a brief part of the story. Same goes for the incest.
So, while the whole story of Pehredaar Piya Ki seems to be revolving around just that relationship, Game of Thrones is much more and consists of varied story lines and plots.
The show Pehredaar Piyaa Ki glorifies such a relationship in a country where child marriage is a major issue till date. It romanticises a concept which the people believe to be true in the present times as well.
Game of Thrones, on the other hand, tells us everything that’s wrong and glorifies nothing of every relationship there is in the show unless required. Maybe, that’s what makes it such unique show in itself.
HIGH LEVEL OF CENSORSHIP
Game of Thrones is an A rated show and is highly censored when telecasted in India. Such stories are altered and scenes of love making are completely removed.
The audience of the show is a matured audience with an open mind to understand these types of complicated stories & relationships projected in such a show.
However, Pehredaar Pyaar Ki caters to an audience that believes the TV to be the truth there is. It goes on to show honeymoon scenes with the 9-year old which absolutely does not make it family friendly and also, mass friendly.
IT AFFECTS THE MASSES AT LARGE
India is a country where prevention of child marriage is still a struggling issue, teenagers do not know how to handle puberty, children are being raped and juveniles sexually harass/rape women. In such a state, a show like Pehredaar Piya Ki hinders the work being done to improve any possibilities of a better society.
Again, the Indian masses at large watch these kinds of shows daily and believe that it is all true, it is how it is how it supposed to be. Where a show like Sasural Simar Ka is one of the most popular shows of the country, a show portraying pedophilia as an ordinary practice can destroy certain mindsets.
