Internet Memes Are A 21st Century Art Form And We’re Here To Tell You Why

Memes aren’t stupid and unfunny. They’re essentially catalysts in establishing harmony, with an added avenue of being a mode of catharsis.

We, the poster kids of the millennial generation have a short term memory that helps us maintain a distance from all the bullshit that surrounds us.

We use humor as a self-defense mechanism because we have been scarred by this shitty world. And we make fun of everything because if we didn’t, we’ll start crying and probably never stop. These traits were bound to organically and naturally transfigure into memes.

Yes, memes. Or should we refer to them as digital art? Let’s take a closer look:

IF THIS IS NOT ART, I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS.

Memes are thinly veiled, aesthetically pleasing cries for help. And I don’t know about you, but it’s the only thing that brings me joy these days.

Memes aren’t stupid and unfunny. They’re essentially catalysts in establishing harmony, with an added avenue of being a mode of catharsis. Like I said, it’s a shitty, oppressive world out there. So bourgeois.

Do you realize how many layers of knowledge you need to decipher the meaning and joke behind each meme? It’s not an easy job, my friend. It’s a stimulating procedure.

For example, to understand the following meme that has been making rounds on social media for the past few weeks, you need to know the following things:

#1. Once upon a time, Justin Timberlake used to sport curly blond hair when he was part of this boy-band called N-Sync.

#2. This hairstyle eventually became known as the infamous “noodle-hair”.

#3. Justin Timberlake, while sporting his “noodle-hair” (with other members of N-Sync whose names I don’t know or care about) released the song “It’s Gonna be Me” where every time he sings the word “me”, it sounds like he’s singing “may”.

Memes have become such an integral part of our lives that a social propriety has now been established when it comes to sharing memes.

Tell me, if you claim your best friend is best your friend and you don’t tag each other in memes, are you really best friends?

Any and every relationship, regardless of its intensity today begins with an exchange of memes, which is brilliant if you think about it!

Because now, you can get to know this strange new person and learn whether you’re compatible or if you have a similar sense of humor and bond with them over your mutual love for memes! Hence, you get to exchange emotions without awkward confrontations.

Isn’t that beautiful? Memes are bringing the world together. They’re propagating love, friendship, and companionship. Is there anything nobler than that?

Memes help us look beyond our differences, be it cultural, regional or ethnic.

They are a way of conveying that “hey, you and I are very different, let’s acknowledge and bond over those differences”, which essentially is boosted by the platform they’re posted on because the internet isn’t indeed as dark as you think. It’s a tool for bonding.

And in this day and age, where a dangerous mixture of condescension and a false sense of supremacy are very commonly placed, how can you bash something that tears down those materialistic and superficial barriers and rather unites us globally into this one big meme-sharing community?

And looking at the larger picture, the idea is to classify memes as art.

Why?

Because art is anything that inspires people and moves them to do great things.

And if you think “Oh, how in the hell do memes inspire people?”, remember that even Picasso and your Van Gogh were never truly appreciated in their own time and their importance was only appreciated when it was too late.

Memes are just far ahead of our times, peeps. And it’s time for you to catch up.
