We Asked College Kids About The Role Of College Societies: This Is What They Said: ED VoxPop

By Prerna Bhandari

If running after professors to get your ECA slips signed is the only time you are seen in class, then you know what I am talking about. Yes, college society people, this one’s for you!

First Day of college: Hundreds of students make it to the same college as you do. They are stopped at the college gates, to only prove that they belong here. NOT COOL. They are made to stand for  hours before any fresher’s programme starts. NOT COOL.

And then Orientation:

The Fine arts society leaves everyone feel useless about their past Rangoli patterns after seeing theirs. Ouch Ouch. Dramsoc enters the auditorium with Dhinak Dhin Dha! COOL.

Dancesoc leaves everyone hooting to their scintillating moves! Super COOL. The Indian Music society reiterates the fact that the rest of us are professional bathroom singers. Well, never mind.

Such is the magic of college societies. Be it drama or dance, art or photography, debating or singing, societies have something in store for each college student. An association with a society is not just a hobby, it often becomes an identity of a student in college.

College Societies give you a creative space to talk about matters that matter to you through your own medium. It is as though the society gives you a voice. Performing or non Performing, every society a charm of its own.

We asked a bunch of college kids about their opinion on the role of societies and here is what they have to say:

So, if you have lost all interest in your subject or had never gained it altogether;

If you feel that your department kids are a sack of potatoes;

If you are a loner but would love to discover other loners;

If you are tired of seeing the same bunch of faces in college and need a reason to go to other colleges;

And finally if you have a passion for that one thing that you see others do and think you can do it equally well if not better;

It’s high time you join a society my friend. Because if you haven’t, you are missing half your college life!
