Music reverberates everywhere. There is little wonder then that music has acted as a muse, as an inspiration for cinema as well. A thorough cataloguing would probably throw up hundreds of such movies, however, as a music lover; I would say the following make for a great weekend viewing-

⦁    Chicago- An Academy Award winning musical film, it takes you to 1920’s Chicago when jazz music and culture dominated. Apart from some stellar acting and glamorous performances by its lead cast, the movie also acts as a profound commentary on the human struggle for fame.
⦁    Music And Lyrics- If you are looking for an adorable no-hassles love story, melodic songs and a good laugh, then this is the movie for you. A rom-com about a musician and a lyricist falling in love, the movie differs from its genre through its simplistic approach and fresh dialogues. Sample this, “A melody is like seeing someone for the first time. The physical attraction. But then as you get to know the person, that’s the lyrics.”
⦁    August Rush- With soul stirring music and beautiful tracks, the movie depicts how a young musical prodigy manages to locate and reunite his parents through the common thread that connects all of them-music. The underlying context is that there is music in every fibre of the world. You just need to listen.

⦁    Walk The Line- This movie is a must for all music lovers; especially for Johnny Cash lovers. The movie is a take on his initial career and his epic romance with fellow artist June Carter. Portrayed impeccably by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, the movie brings to life the legend that was Johnny Cash.

⦁    Dreamgirls- This movie explores the R&B scene and its rise in popularity in the 1960’s and 1970’s America by following the all-girls act ‘Dreams’. The members of the band have been portrayed in the movie by phenomenal performers as Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson.

⦁    The Sound Of Music- Any list on the best musical movies remains incomplete without the inclusion of this cult classic. Inspired by the Von Trapp family of Austria, the film is the musical journey of a nun into the hearts of Captain von Trapp and his children. This cheerful movie endears you to it.
